84 year old still drives his first car (ford model A from 1929)

That's amazing, especially the bit about his and his late wife's initials carved into the steering wheel

Just regular tune-ups

All the way down to the crankshaft. 😛

thats a lot of Ford bashing, to be expected on these boards though.
cool story

That's really something. I love that he souped it up to race the other kids home from school

As for the Ford bashers...it wasn't until the 70s that Fords started to suck. They're coming back around slowly, but they lost a lot of loyalty in the 80's when everything from Japan was good.

only 200,000 miles are on it. I would expect a lot more....even at low mileage a year there should be closer to 750k on the clock.

If you read the article you'd realize that's not his only car (he owns 25), and it doesn't even sound like its his primary car.

well it IS a ford, the odometer probably stopped working in 1951

My dads first car was a '31, many years later, when he became successful, he bought another one, and rebuilt it just the way he's first one was. It runs great, but doesn't have the rumble seat though, he told me that was an option he could not a ford in 1931.
He now has 28 cars, one is a 1911 EMF, and yes, it still runs, but he only drives it in the daytime. Seems he doesn't like cleaning, and polishing the brass GAS fired head lights.
BTW, my dad is 84

That is amazing to say the least.
My how times have changed.

He met his wife, Dorothy, shortly after he bought it, when he was 17 and she was 14

Today if that happened, the guy would go to jail.

Right, that's why I found this story nothing extraordinary. He just kept an old car around.

There's an article out about the old timer and his Saab w/1million miles on it. He got a brand new Saab from Saab for that.

http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=538098

The article says they didnt give him squat:

'Saab executives rode in the car and discussed putting it in their museum in Sweden. Gilbert hoped they would give him a new car, as a replacement, but he didn't get so much as a T-shirt from Saab.

"I am a little disappointed in them," he said.'

Damn Saab pricks.

"Update: Man who put 1 million miles on Saab gets free replacement

Peter Gilbert initially didn't get a thing from Saab after donating his car to an auto museum. (The vehicle survived 1 million miles and eight deer collisions.) But after Saab got a lot of free publicity because of Gilbert's story, the company decided to not only give Gilbert a new car, but it has extended the offer to anyone who puts 1 million miles on their originally owned Saab.
