I recommend Powerline Communications. There is tremendous possibilities in that area.
unfortunately, now that SBC/verizon have made a deal with the FCC for fiber-to-premise, PLC is likely dead, its very tuff to compete with 15Mbps pipes for $50/month

to put it in perspective RBOCs (SBC/verizon) have annhilated the entire clec/dsl industry leaving a graveyard of northpoint, rythm, quest, with covad the only survivor (and a penny stock at that)

but good luck!

The key item with PLC's is that it's not restricted to the broadband industry. It's actually more useful for utilities to start metering with demand metering since they can track your usage in real-time with PLCs.

Ok, I think I have some ideas as to what I want to invest in. Does anyone have recommendations for an e-broker?

ameritrade. they are fast, not expensive, great record keeping and other features/services.

How about some metals: gold, silver, platinum?

They've done me well lately.

Yah, gold has been up quite a bit in the past few years.

If you're serious about putting money into stocks, I would avoid mutual funds. They tend to butt rape you on commissions and few even beat the market. The exception to this is index funds, which just track whatever index and charge very low commissions.

Like someone has already mentioned, do your own research. I would recommend reading Peter Lynch's book One Up on Wall Street. Some great basic advice in there.
Actually, my mutual funds are indeed index funds, so I should be safe in that regard.

Here's a bump for more advice about which e-broker to use.

This is a secret you MUST NOT REVEAL!

Learn to play options. Then you'll be rich in no time!

there is truth to this.

I know people made much $$$ with options. I tried to learn about them but I never got a full grasp of how to skilfully trade/gamble with them.

An Options is pretty much betting against the company you buy into. What happens is you sell stocks you dont have and buy them at a later time. Say you bought enron before it went to crap. If you bought an option on it, what would happen is you'd sell stocks you don't have to some sap who wants to buy enron, and when enron plummets, you buy the shares and give them to the guy that bought them from you. This is what I've been taught an option is. But I'm a freshman at art college.

Also check out the 10 hottest and coldest stocks. If one looks like its on a good curve... ride it... if it shoots up over night more than likely people are gonna buy the next day, buy as well , and let it level out, just have to get in before the level.

I am quite sure you are referring to "short sales" not options.

Corner the FCOJ market, done.

or...Maybe your bank has a personal finance planner you can talk to for free in the branch? There certainly are riskier things to invest in, but you don't just want to throw your money away. If this ballot initiative in CA passes that gives 3bn to biotech companies I might take a look in that area; but certainly do not put all of your money in one basket.
