For Christmas...
It's a family thing for me. Absolutely nothing related to that Christ fella is involved in my Christmas traditions, which involves eating massive portions of deliciousness, spending time with family I don't get to see all that often anymore, and trading gifts. I get to get clothes from my grandma, which I used to hate but I love now.
Yeah, this is me too. My grandmother is the only religious person in my entire extended family, and even she is more into it for the long-term friendships she's made with the other people at her church. We have a Jewish side of the family too, but our typical "Christmas" gatherings are as non-religious as you can get. Mainly it's just a convenient time for everyone to get together because everyone has the day off.
We don't even get much into the consumerism aspect of it either. We pretty much buy each other $20 gifts and that's all. My parents are each getting a small DVD set costing $20-$30. My brother is getting a wired Xbox 360 controller for his PC that I got for $12. My girlfriend will get flowers and a massage. And that's it. I think the most I've ever gotten for Christmas was one year when I had my mom tell all my relatives to give me cash instead of gifts so I could buy a telescope, and I got around $300. Otherwise I figure on a couple small things from my parents and $50 from my well-off grandparents (and no money but a very sweet card from my other grandmother).
I was very confused when I first heard that some people gave each other flatscreen TVs, game consoles, cars, etc. for Christmas. Never understood why you'd put yourself through the stress of buying hundreds or thousands of dollars worth of stuff and piling on massive credit card debt just for a present. Hell, unless I'm getting something small and cheap, I always consult the person I'm buying for first to make sure they want it. When I got my girlfriend a laptop backpack for her birthday a few days ago, I told her what I was getting her up front and went through a bunch of different designs until she found one she liked. I'd hate to have bought one she didn't like.
