80mph Speed limits in Texas?!

I have an 85 mile commute each way, and the majority of it is on a 6 lane highway that everyone goes 65-85 on and the speed limits are 55mph at the highest... wtf is with that.

The only time people actually notice the limit signs is when they are doing stop and go. The rest of the time everyone goes as fast as possible. It is amazing how quickly you can get around the Chicago metro area when traffic is light and you can do 80+.
