80mm fan on side panel

Hi,

Tonight I am planning on cutting a hole for a new Sunon 80mm fan on the side panel of my case

I don't have a hole cutter yet so am going to try using a Dremel. Will a dremel cut a hole throught the side panel?

I was thinking of cutting the hole directly above the CPU/HSF (Athlon 1.4 & GW FOB38) and placing the fan blowing outwards to expel the hot air coming off the heatsink is this a good idea or should I set the fan to blow cool air onto the HSF? (I assume this is not a good idea because the fan on the HS is blowing outwards)

I am also planning to cut a blow hole in the top of the case but that will have to wait because I cannot take the top panel off, so I need to take EVERYTHING out of the case before I attempt that one.

Anyone have any other useful tips for cutting these holes?

what type of temps are you getting with a fop blowing outwards? I have essentially that set up- but my 80mm blows inward onto a sk6 also blowing onto the hs. my temps run 40c idle 45 load.

have you tested the fop blowing onto the hs?

Haven't fitted the FOP38 yet, using a cheap'n'nasty one on the chip at the moment which I got when I brought the chip at a local computer fair 2 weeks ago.

Temps went up to 71 on the weekend whilst playing Diablo II! Idle they are usually 50-55. Thats what prompted me to get the FOB38 and new fans, I will be fitting them after work.

I thought, the fan on a HS should really blow outwards?

If I can get temps anyway near yours I'll be a happy bunny.

The fan on a heatsink usually should be placed to blow air down at the base or towards the processor. As for modifying your side panel, a holesaw works well with a perfect circle cut. Holesaws are not that cheap though. They usually run about $15. A Dremel would be fine, but take your time. I have two 92mm fans in my side panel and I have them blowing air in over my cards and heatsink. I suppose you could do it either way, but if you have a front intake and back outake, it would seem logical to have side fans blowing in so you are not disrupting the front to back airflow too much. Just my thoughts. Good Luck! 😀

Thanks, I considered getting a holesaw but cost is too much at present (you need a compatible arbor too don't you??).

I may get one with next months pay, already spend a small fortune this month!

Yes, you would need an arbor to use the holesaw. One other thing I thought of, if you go ahead and put a fan in your side panel, it is a good idea to use rubber gromets on the screw holes b4 attaching the fan to the side panel. They work wonders and cut down on noise and vibration. I have rubber gromets on all my fan mounts. I believe 5/16 is the size, but they are sometimes hard to find and for the right price. Good Luck! 😀
