Looks like I still don't know everything about the PS3. That's just crappy if they dont work. I guess I just assumed that it would be like the PS2 vs PS1... you could use the PS1 controllers on the PS2, even though the PS2 controllers were superior. Basically, I guess that's another reason for me to not buy the PS3. 🙁

Unfortunately for DDR fans, there's also no DDR game that I know of even scheduled for the console. Yet I saw another DDR coming out for the PS2 and the 360 already has two.

There's supposed to be a good adapter (from Radio Shack, IIRC) that works well enough with the guitars, but I don't remember the specifics.

That's good to know 😀.

I don't know... if you believe Sony, they discontinued the 20 GB because no one ever wanted it. So you'd think the same would be true of the 40 GB, which is more gimped than the 20 GB. I don't think it's a big deal for Sony to make two consoles, but it is a big deal for the retailers who are stocking and taking up shelf space for two separate models of a very expensive, poor performing console in a big box. So I wonder if this is just Best Buy, although the memo does hint that it's Sony.

I have to think that if they're discontinuing the 80 GB it'll be replaced with something else, probably a bigger hard drive. Who knows if it'll have PS2 compatibility though.

Mugs. not to start a flame war here or anything, but "poor performing console" by who's standard?

I think he means poor performing in terms of sales. Over the Christmas season the 40 gig version thumped the 80 gig one.

that BB employee basically said what my friend (who also works at BB) told me when i asked him about the situation.

By a retailer's standard, in comparison to the alternatives.
- PS3 has the biggest box, so it takes up the most shelf space. That's important to retailers who track their profits by inch of shelf space.
- PS3 is the most expensive, so the cost to keep it in stock is the highest
- PS3 has very small profit margins; probably comparable to Xbox 360, but far less than the Wii
- PS3 is the poorest performing console by a sizable margin. Going back to August (pre-Halo 3 and pre-holiday to try to get the fairest comparison), the PS3 accounted for 13% of console sales. PS2 was 20%, 360 was 27%, and Wii was 40%. So by any standard that makes it a relatively poor performer.

I was just throwing out possibilities. It seems unlikely to me that Sony would discontinue the top system entirely, so the two possibilities that I came up with were
1. It's just Best Buy discontinuing it
2. Sony will be replacing it with something else

I think it is more likely that option 2 is correct.

I'm betting they're going to introduce another SKU that will essentially be the 40GB PS3 with a different sized HDD and a game bundled in. Not unlike what the 360 does. Will save them money on having to produce different version.

anyone know if / when the PS3 will include an IR port for remotes? If that is never coming, then I might just jump now for $319.

Wait a minute. Let me ask the question just in case I misunderstood.

The PS3 doesn't support the use of a remote???

This may be a 'where have you been?' question but I never even considered a console that touts itself as a blu-ray player would not support remotes. Hopefully I misunderstood. 🙂

It doesn't support IR remotes without a dongle looking device.

They sell a bluetooth remote separately.

the price point of the sku will lead to the final nail in the coffin for sony. also, it doens't have any games.

I see what you did there......

😀

looks like my original idea is pretty damn close to the current inside information/rumors... drop 80gb, replace with possibly a 160gb and DualShock3 bundled in. I assume the white 40gb PS3 will include the white DS3.

Personally I'd much rather see only 1 sku from everyone.

Agreed, same with the xbox 360. They do not even need different color units, maybe just removable face plates (like cellphones) that they could sell separately if one wanted another color / design.

Every xbox 360 should have been identical. Every Playstation 3 should have been identical. But then again, they sold more by having lower tier ones for a lower price, but IMO, the 360 especially should all have had at least a reasonable sized hard drive.

In features / functionality that is, I can see cutting cost by shrinking the process.

ArsTechnica front page has a rumor now that the 80GB is being replaced by a new model with 120-160GB HD and Dual Shock 3 controller so you're ready to rumble (with PS2 games too).

That will be a good model for using as a media center, you can put your full music collection on it and have plenty of room for game installs and DLC.
