Cr@p!!! Staples did the same thing to me!! They gave away the one I had them holding for me!!! They said a guy came in last night and asked for one....they assumed it was me and gave it to him!!!!! I said ...no, I'm the guy you made wait 40 minutes on the phone and who informed you he would be in on Saturday at noon to pick it up...I even gave them my name and was assured a post-it with my name was placed in it! Every employee in the store knew who I was and why I was there. Colerain Ave. in Cincinnati. Hope you enjoy it dood!!!!

Well, on a positive note...we were able to find one that was "open box" and I have that one. Pretty cool.

Picked up one today (Saturday) afternoon. Just walked into the local Staples, and there
it was on the shelf, next to the 40 and 120Gb models. No hassle, no problems. Quick and
easy.

rossman, haven't opened it ? 😉

I will pick up the adaptec firewire card tomorrow.. it's $50 - $5 IR - $20 MIR.. total of $25 + taxes... at compusa btw.. hehe, forgot.

Then it's time to hook up one of these bad boys....

I just opened mine....neat little case (compared to my USB 2.0 External enclosures) very lightweight.

I wanted to crack this open and stick a different drive in this case, it seem that it is glued together, has anyone else busted the case open yet?

first thing i did 🙂
Its not glue, its latches at i think the back of the unit...pick em up with a small screwdriver and the things come off.
It looks like some sort of proprietary connector..i couldnt see very well without unscrewing the drive from the plate..and i was too lazy...but thats wat it looked like to me. Some1 go further and validate my findings. 🙂

Same here. Do I just pop this into an empty PCI slot, load the drivers and connect the drive?

I put it all apart, adn took off the plate that is in the back of the drive, the maxtor guys made a real nice job in this, so if you guys want to put another drive in it I don't see any reason you can't, really easy to take apart!!! Now I'll put it togehter back again (sometimes I wonder why I am so curious)

how the hell did you guys open these.. it looks like i'd break it before it'd open..

and what's the model # on the drive anyway??

It's easy, start on the back of the drive, pull those 2 pieces of dark plastics one at a time form the back to the front with a small screwdriver...the model of the drive is 98196H8 made in sept 2000

As stated before, it should be easy to substitute a different drive...

UOUUU yours has a newer drive, I'm not sure what the diferences are, the specs looks the same, mine is the DiamondMax 80 Ultra ATA 100 #98196H8

can't leave "well enough" alone? 😉 fwiw, i considered the swap to a bigger drive, but it will happen later.

as for now, i fired mine up this evening, WinXP vanilla. drive recognized immediately and already formatted fat32; nice 😎 .

all in all, i am very happy. thanks, again, azshopper70!

I was able to get 2 of these yesterday. Even convinced the store manager to let me use the $50 off $200 coupon that expired the day before.

On Maxtor's site there is a $50.00 rebate coupon that applies to the purchase of this drive X01FWRA080 and Maxtor's DV Producer K01PR1394A which is a firewire pci card bundled with a firewire cable and Arcsoft ShowBiz and Arcsoft PhotoBase software. Does anyone know where to buy DV Producer and what the cost is. I'm trying to figure out if it would be worth purchasing it to get the $50 rebate.

For those of you who say this drive is out of production, that may be so. But it is still available for purchase on Maxtor's site for $279.95 LINK
