80gb Ipod: To buy or not to buy

I've been playing with my brother's 30gig Ipod this past week and I've fallen for it. I've been downloading stuff all week trying to fill it up for him after a computer error caused him to lose everything on his ipod (and not be able to restore it).

Anyways, I was browsing at Sears last night and saw the MS Zune. I've tried reading up on them, but I didn't find many articles comparing it to the Ipod. The Ipod appears to have the better pricing in relation to file capacity, as well as a considerably more popular unit. I've never been a fan of buying "generation 1" technology, and I'm afraid that if I were to buy a Zune, they'd come out with a 2nd gen that fixes all the bugs and quirks.

What are your thoughts...~$330 is a lot of money to me for an 80gig Ipod. Is there a better video and audio alternative with a similar file size?

<-- Have had a Zune for a month and a half now, and wouldn't trade it for the world. The Zune fits me perfectly, it does all the small things right. However, these small things might be pointless to others.

My only complaints with the Zune right now are the lack of a proper method to access it as a removable drive at any time while plugged in, and I hate that you have no current control over organization of video files. They are either considered Music Videos or just a video clip, which is a problem if you have a ton of video files that you have to scroll through.

Yeah... 80GB ipod? Don't waste money. That's what, 2 years of music? Just because you have that big of a library, don't assume you want it ALL with you ALL the time.

I like my Zune. I can recognize that there are things I don't like, but they aren't bothersome enough for me to not like it.

The Zune will get bigger. It's just that ipod support from stores and third parties (and a pretty crappy ad campaign) isn't helping things. When you go to just about any store there are going to ipod accessories... doesn't matter what kind of store it is. Grocery stores have accessories. Electronics retailers are only giving the Zune a 3 foot wide shelf face, while giving iPods entire aisles. iPod has become the "Kleenex" of media players. So for the Zune to actually be well-known is a pretty good feat in itself, I think. Mostly, I just like that apple is getting some competition with a bankroll to support it. Save for the color and shape of the iPod, there really hasn't been that much change to it in the past year or more. Where is the innovation?

Get a Sirius radio.
I haven't touched my ipod ever since I got my satellite radio.
With ipod i had over 20gbs of music and found my self only listening to 2 maybe 3 albums over and over again.
With satellite you get the variety. On top of that, you can set favorite artist or songs so whenever an artist or song on your list somes on any station, you get an alert and you have the option of switching to that station or not. Another thing, most satellite radios have a "tivo-like" rewind feature.

Because a subscription service and non-portable device is exactly what it sounds like he wants! ;)

Ironically enough, I was also tossing around the idea of satellite radio vs. Ipod. Way to complicate things even more now!

To legally fill and 80gb ipod with commercial music would cost $16,000-$20,000.

I have a 30gig zune. My primary concern between the two was video and ONLY video. I figure either player would be able to handle MP3's just fine. Honestly, I made the right choice. The larger screen is nice (yeayea, same rez, but it is still bigger). The player is a little larger and i'm sure weighs a little more, but it matters so little to me... I don't even notice it, If i'm lying on my back I can still comfortably hold up the zune for hours.

The 30 gigs is kinda cramping, but I have 3 seasons of tv shows, and two movie lengths worth of video on my zune, some mp3's (not that many actually, haven't gotten around to it) and I still have 17gig's free. So even though 30 gigs is kinda cramped, it'll probably prove enough for me.
The zune software kinda blows. I wouldn't say iTunes is perfect, but the zune software lags, in the end it works and does a decent job, just kinda hangs sometimes (at leasat on my computer). Not a big deal having to wait 3 seconds.. but you know.. I'll complain anyway.

I have wifi turned off, don't beam me your crappy music, kthx.... well okay, there just is never anyone around. The picture feature is alright I guess, I like that you can select your wallpaper (Calvin as stupendous man? EXCELLENT). The Radio actually oddly enough has been one of the features i really like. One of my problems is I get bored of my music sometimes, so having my radio presents set to things like classical stations, jazz, NPR, popular stations etc, really expands how much music i have available. I guess that is one reason I haven't felt the need to transfer more mp3's onto my Zune.

in terms of pricing aren't a 30gig ipod and 30gig zune the same price?

In short : Between an iPod and a Zune i'd say it's a tossup. If being 'fashionable' is important and in this category i'll include things like accessories, then IPOD wins hands down. I know this matters, The zune is kinda the odd man out, but it isn't ugly (imo at least). If you do get a zune finding a case may make you cry. I bought my case at target ( www.agent18.com ) It's pretty nice, but going to that webpage, you see 1 zune case, and like 10 ipod cases. I would say this isn't typically of the ratio.. usually 100ipod cases to every zune case you'll find. Just decide which feature is MOST important (be it batterylife, size, mp3, video, etc)... then find out what does it BEST or at least is better enough at it to make it worth getting.

edit: oh before the "Fanboy, i bet you were waiting in line" I probably wouldn't have bought a zune, but was given one as a gift. Now that I have one I wouldn't give it up.

Even if obtaining the music through less legal means, what the hell are you going to do with 80 GB worth? :Q

The only people that I can even imagine needing 80GB of portable music space are professional DJ's. Sure as hell beats carrying around 10 cases of hundreds of CD's. Although I've usually linked any players more than 30GB's to being for those people who want to watch a lot of video on the go.

I spent all day reading about Zune's after getting a few PM's and a few recommendations here publicly. After reading through hundres of user reviews and playing with a demo in Sears locked behind the demo stand, I've decided that I don't care for it.

Ipod here I come!

Do you actually plan on using the full 80 GB?that's a hell of a lot of music....

30 GB is even a lot unless you play a lot of video
