I'm not as up to date on the topic as I would like to be, but what exactly are the differences between

802.11b and 802.11g ---- if I am looking to wire my apt with a few friends what is better?

802.11b runs at a theoretical max speed of 11mbps, and the standard has been agreed on, and all 802.11b devices can talk.

802.11g runs at a theoretical max speed of 54mbps, but the standard hasn't yet been agreed, so there is no guarantee that all current 54g equipment will work with each other, and the stuff that comes out after the standard has been agreed.
