802.11b 2.4GHz WiFi over apartment complex?

I was wondering- I live in a small apartment complex and it would be nice to cut this broadband price in half by giving my neighbor access.. hes on the other side of the complex though.. does anyone know the specs from their personal experiences with 2.4ghz, or 5.8ghz?

any help is appreciated,
matt enderle

I don't think you'll have too much luck going across the complex unless the complex is about 3 apartments wide. You might be able to rig up some sort of antennae, but I'll leave that topic to more qualified people.

What's the distance between the apartments? Any walls in the way? If it's more than 300 feet forget it If it's more than 200 with walls in the way then you can forget it too.

Personally I'm very weary about using a wireless router in an apartment complex. WEP is not secure enough and it's easy to crack.

I live in manhattan overlooking the east river and occasionally I connect to 2.4 wireless networks in brooklyn! Then again I live on the 20th floor and have a wide open space.

It might be possible with some directional high gain antennas on both ends, but unless you have a lot of time experimenting with it I wouldn't consider it.

im talkin more like 50-100ft of distance.. a few walls maybe 4 or 5 tops. also im not worried about security here..my network stuff is passworded and i doubt they are familiar with l0phtcrack around here.
thanks

WPA security, or more, is a must in an apartment complex...

That's not too long of a distance. Nevertheless, it might not reach b/c of the many walls.
