Core i7 960 > Core i5 ?

I wont be doing any virtualization...is there an advantage?

Only a 500 watt PSU?

In case it went over your head, when you said do your worst, jpeyton tried to waste your money the best he could while also building a complete PC for $800.

To answer your other question, a quality 500W PSU is fine.

I've been thinking about making my next (or transforming my current) PC into a LAN cube.

Laptops are expensive and useless for gaming.
