80 GIG HDD on ABIT kt7-a... gives me only 7.85Gig

so, this is the story....
i already have a 13 Gig with Win98 working fine, and I want to add this 80 Gig as a slave.
Bios auto recognizes it fine, as 80 gig, but when i try to partition it, it sais my $100 drive only has 10812 Mb. What happened to the rest 70 gig?
i even did one partition and formatted it the way it is....it gives me 7.85 Gig total, instead of 80...arrrrgh!!
it sais it is FAT 32, so i know its not that size limitation. There gotta be some size limitation somewhere, but where?????
Help me out peeps, youre my only chance.....

There should be a jumper or switch on the driver to "fix" this trouble. Usually this is found on HDD's over 32 GB (actually I think the limit is 33.8 GB) to overcome the drive limitation capacity. If not then you would have to use something like a "Disk Manager" utility. What make and model HDD is this?

yo!
it seems to me like you haven't tryed to use the disk in windows...
cos in bios it will say it's only 10GB...
cos there is a "classic" bugg... after 65536 or something (that number...) anyway... it count's in MB in dos.. so it will say it's only 10xxxMB cos it calculates from 0 again and up after 65536... know what i mean yO?
so just format it in dos and it'll work fine in windows..

SkillZ:
There's still the >33.8 GB limitation to deal with, and as stated before he will need to find/use the jumper or use a DM utility.

Buz2b:yo!
well... if he hasn't messed around with the jumpers since he got the harddrive... then he doesn't need to change the jumper cos it's at max limit for the HDD (afaik).. but if i'm wrong at that point... (but i don't think so) he has to do as you say yes...
over and out yo! 😉

my tivo drive got recognized as a 10gb drive even thought it was a 30gb one cause it was 'locked'. ran some app called qunlock.exe and it fixed it.

thx for response

well, there are some jumpers on the HDD. They were not set on slave, so I had to look on the manual (one 3 by 3' pieceof paper) and set the jumpers in the position for slave drive, for HDDs over 32 gig.

This is a SAMSUNG hdd, did not come with any manager, or any other software, utility.
where can I get a manager utility, and what would i do with it if i get it?

ok, the BIOS says it is 80 GB, but fdisk says its only 10812 Mb. I do everyhting in WIN98 (I RUN fdisk and format with Run command, from start). I would not know how to follow SKillz advice and do it in DOS.

pls help. and thx for the input

well... it's simple...
don't care about what dos say... cos dos isn't made for big hdds... so it will count over from 0 again after 65536MB... and voila dos says it's 10812MB (65536+10812mb = 76348MB = 80GB)... and 76348-65536=10812MB etc... you getit?
as far as i read... you haven't said that you formated the drive yet? so.. i can't tell much more...

ok, breaking news!

there are 3 major pin configuration , poorly detailed on the 3 by 3 Installation manual.

LOWER 32 gb
UPPER 32 GB
32 GB Clip

all the info i have given you until now is with the HDD set as slave in the second configuration (UPPer 32 GB).
Now I changer id to this 32 Gb clip. i dont know what it means, but i said..lemme try it.
Now when i fdisk it, my slave 80 gig hdd reads 32248 mb. hell, its a step forward from 10812 Mb it read when set on the previous configuration, but still about 50 gig short.
what should i do now?

hmm, now in the third 32 gb clip configuration, the BIOS reads 32248 mb and fdisk reads the same thing.
before, in the UPPER 32 gb configuration, the BIOS said 80 gb, but fdisk said 10812 mb
Based on skillz last post, i realize that it must be the UPPER 32 gb configuration that is the right one.

I formatted the drive once, under the UPPER 32 gb configuration, and it gave me 7.78 gb on space. Now i deleted any partition on the drive, so its not even recognized anymore. Im just checking what fdisk reads its size to be.

any help?

where could i get that Disk Manager utility?

what configuratin is the right one?

are my statemenst correct?

thank you all.

i succesfully formatted, single partitioned my 80 gig drive, using the UPPER 32 GB config. it only has 74.5 gb unfortunately, and this shows that truth in advertising is only found in Biochemistry, arrrrrgh, shouldve stuck to being a chemist.

thx until i need you again

MS FDISK and Format does not properly report drives over 64GB. What you get is what SkillZ said, the difference between the real size of your drive and 64GB. As for the "real size" you ought to read the fine print. All hard drive manufacturers rate a megabyte as a million bytes, or 1,000,000 bytes. Software (including your operating system) rates it differently. A kilobyte is 1024 bytes (2^10, or two to the tenth power, binary or something). A megabyte is 1,048,576 bytes, or 2^20. Gigabyte is 1,073,741,824 bytes, or 2^30. Your hard drive is rated at 80,000,000,000 bytes by the manufacturer, divided by 1,000,000,000 for their 80GB size. Divide the same number by 1,073,741,824 (the number software uses) and you get 74.5+, which is what all your software will report. There _is_ truth in advertising, but it's found in the fine print that nobody reads. Take a look at CRT monitors some day...
