I would seem to make more sense to me just to buy a new Garmin every couple of years unless you have a really expensive model or have real specialized needs, like an OTR truck driver.

Hell no.
Garmin's policy states that it's the lifetime of your unit or the lifetime of the company, which ever is less.

When they become transferrable, wake me up.
Until then, I will stick to buying a new GPS every 3 years.

Yeah that's my problem. I have a 5 year old GPS that still works but I don't want to spend that much money on maps in case it's nearing the end of its life. And I hate buying new things when the old ones still work just fine.

Do like we do: buy a new one every so many years and gift the old one to someone who hasn't tried a GPS yet, or who is less fortunate.

As I recall Garmin gives you one free update within six months of initial purchase.

Actually, within 60 days of the first day your unit receives a signal from the satellites. After that, you pay.
