$80+ for a car key? On a Chevy no less?

My Mom got a Malibu Maxx and went to have an extra key made. Local hardware store couldn't do it - apparently you can only get at Chevy dealer. $38.59+tax for blank, $40 labor to "program" it. That's ridiculous! My Mercedes key is cheaper than that!

Its the price you pay for the new transponder key security systems, my GFs PT has it, luckly Chrysler allows you to program the keys yourself.

Yes, has chip in it. Guess next car I buy, I'll be sure to negotiate an extra key into the sale price. At this rate, I'll need the loan to help cover the cost.

I find it hard to believe that Mercedes is cheaper - what do they charge?

if you own a mercedes, you do not need to worry about getting a loan to cover an extra key

Did the car come with 2 sets of keys? Why not just use one set, keep other set somewhere safe?

Does that key have a resistor in it or a programmable chip ? I have an Iroc-Z that has the resistor. The ignition cylinder was $65 and the key was $35. I installed them. The new cylinder came with a plain key and the dealer measured the resistance of the old key. It came up as a VAT13 key (keys were from VAT1 to VAT15). I didn't get a spare made. Hopefully I won't lose this key. ;)

Do those GM cars still have that "SECURITY" light that comes on meaning you cannot shut off the engine or you won't be able to start? I had a 88 TA that had that and I removed that "feature" because it was not trustworthy.

Cheers!

Why is that I doubt the chip actually costs that much, or that it's that labor-intensive to program it?

Where did all of your keys go? IIRC, I received three sets of keys when I bought my new car, AND a valet key.........

Just came with 2 keys and still have both (it's only been about 3 months). Mom just likes to have an extra spare. And Benz is 2002.

Just an FYI concerning these keys. I used to work in retail & made keys as part of my job so I know a bit about these keys. You can have copies made of them they just will not start the car. They will open the doors & trunk but that's it. So it's a great spare key if you just happen to lock your keys inside the car.

I paid about $38 to have a spare ignition key made for my car ('94 Bonneville SSEi), and it has a chip in it.
