I don't know what I think of this. I feel strongly that the abuses at Abu Ghraib were war crimes, and incredibly harmful to our international relations. I also feel that, since this guy is a prison guard as a civilian, he of all people should have known better. That said, the actual abuses he was charged with were not especially severe (the most severe involved punching an inmate in the chest, which the Army charged as an assault likely to cause death or grievous bodily harm), and 8 years is a long time. Army inmates are comparatively unlikely to get parole, so he will likely serve 6 1/2 years or so (they get 5 days off per month for good time). Ah well . . .
