1) how dumb can you be leaving a (loaded!?!?) gun lay around

2) how neglegent can you be. you have an 8 year old that hasnt been taught that guns kill?

3) hand guns are made for killing people, and thats just what it did.

While I feel sorry for the family, the parents should have taught their 8-year old better firearm safety.
I'm wondering what kind of impression the kids were given on guns, when I was 8 I would have been scared shitless to touch a gun.

Same here. I had been taken shooting by the time I was five and I had the fear of the lord in my regarding guns.

I never said that.

You should have to take a test before owning a gun. A very detailed test that takes a while.

I know you didn't. I was just carrying that same logic a step further to show you how ridiculous it is. The problem wasn't the gun but the parents lack of responsibility.

True but I really don't think its ridiculous because if there was some way for me to go back in time and make sure guns were never created I would.

I know thats not possible now. Guns are hear to stay no matter what rules are passed.

I do know as well anything else could be easily used as a weapon.

Kids will do stupid things...where do you draw the line?

Those of you who are saying "Parents should not leave a loaded gun in the house!" What if the kid found a locked gun and unlocked it, loaded it and THEN shot his little brother? Would you be saying "Parents should not have guns period!". What if he stabbed his brother? There's really no way to know. This kid could seriously be completely stupid or somewhere along the way he learned that it wouldn't harm anyone if he pointed a loaded gun at his little brother and pulled the trigger.

You?re taking it well out of context. It?s clear as day the parents are at fault. Even the article states that as a result, there is a chance they will get charged for breaking a law specific to this scenario.

If the kid did unlock the gun, and did load it, then that is a totally different story, as the kid obviously has some sort of intent to shot something.

It takes a lot more premeditation to unlock and load a gun than it does to just point it and pull the trigger. Personally, I keep all my guns locked in a gun safe with a combination lock. The ammo I keep locked up separately.

When my son is old enough, I'll teach him how to shoot. For now, it's hands off all firearms and since I'm the only one who knows the combination there is no way he'll ever get access to them.

Besides, even though a child may know it's wrong to do certain things they don't always think of the possible repercussions of their actions.

People that leave their loaded guns around UNLOCKED should be charged with criminal negligence.

I don't care if you have the smartest "honor roll student at xxx" kid and tell him not to touch your guns, leaving 'em around unlocked and unloaded is just fvcking stupid. This exactly what fvcking happens.

Stupid kids!

What do you expect? They're kids. Stupid parents!

When I was 8, I had proper respect for handguns and shotguns. I NEVER would have messed with them at all. Certainly not pointed them at anyone. EVER.

this story is just really sad. the lives of everyone in the family have been wrecked.

No, they shouldn't have left a loaded handgun around where the kids could get at it.

These two statements are not mutually exclusive.
