Some are just a product of their time. Some, though, are just mind-blowing weird.

It's an era thing. Nothing there to be offended about but at least people back then didn't cry and whine every day about it.

I'm starting to think that a lot of that was meant to be humorous and we're mistaking it for being real opinions. We've become too adapted to a world where advertisers aren't even allowed to joke about that kind of stuff because, obvious humor or not, someone will complain about it. It has conditioned us to assuming that advertisements can only be funny by being nonsensical, and that any other things that occur in them are honest facts. I'm starting to think that people were smart enough, or not narcissistic enough, to assume that most "outrageous" things that they saw in advertising was meant to be humorous and just left it at that. It was later that people discovered how cathartic righteous indignation was and started applying it to everything.

o_O I'm sure it is really funny if you're a woman who has suffered from physical abuse to see that first advertisement.

That attitude is exactly what I'm talking about. Women who have been abused might not have liked it, but they knew it's meant to be a joke and took it as such. Maybe they can't laugh at it, but at least they can view it in a neutral, non-outraged way because they know it's not meant to be malicious. Intent is everything, and maybe people could be trusted to understand intent better in those days. If they were actually promoting the abuse of women that's one thing, if they were just trying to make a joke that's another.

So, two wrongs make a right? Is that really your argument?

My argument is a well adjusted adult, when seeing something in a magazine/tv show/web page/radio story... can use their remarkably evolved mind to turn the fuckin' page/channel/station... Of course I might be expecting a bit much from the average American....

Usually these kinds of threads are meant to allow us to pat ourselves on the back for being so much more evolved than the people of those times. I'm starting to think it might not be so cut and dried though. Perhaps we've just lost the ability to comprehend the subtlety of the humor going on there.

I seriously doubt that these were attempts at irony or subtle humor...
