8 million Kinects sold in 60days

LOL. Never stopped Sony from spewing crap.

Well they were just being ambiguous. Many companies do this including MS when it benefits them. It is different though when MS is saying that is the actual number sold.

It better be true otherwise a they could be in for a huge lawsuit if stock prices changed because of fraudulent data.

If 8 million is true, it's an impressive number given the handful of games available, only 2-3 of those at best worth owning. I have Kinect Adventures, Dance Central, those are decent, have played Motion Sports, Sonic Free Riders, Kinect Sports, Joy Ride, and Fighters Uncaged, and those are pretty awful from what I have experienced.

I think Sony did a decent job having developers patch in Move support on existing titles instead of just depending on a launch lineup to sell hardware, but at the same time, Microsoft threw a lot more ad money at the Kinect than Sony did with the Move, so that probably took money away from actual development (which would explain Kinect Sports coming from Rare and still being a steaming pile).

Microsoft has always struck me as a company that kind of throws hardware out to see what the reaction is and then decides whether or not to actually support it. Hopefully 8 million sold means support is forthcoming.

This thing is a blast.. and I admit that I was very skeptical at first. I played Kinnect Sports with my family for about 2 hours last night, and it was great. My brother and I were drunk one night, and did some kung fu bowling as well. We now do a family game night for an hour a day...then I go back to Black Ops of course.. haha

I was a huge hater of motion gaming, especially the Wii. I bought a Kinect for my wife, and it turns out I love it. That doesn't mean I prefer it, but actually using it has changed my opinion on it significantly.

From PC World:

Update: It seems Ballmer pulled a Sony, slyly employing the verb 'sold' to mean sold-to-stores. Those 8 million Kinect units 'sold' are in fact 'shipped to store', not sold-through. I've updated the article accordingly.

Yes but MS' Aaron Greenberg also said that the numbers are essentially the same because every Kinect they make gets sold. Probably less than a million difference between sold in and sold thru.

The only thing that sucks is that Sony is making the game Sorcery, that looks pretty damn cool and if I get one of these it will likely be the Kinect as it will have much more developer support since it is selling so much more.

Do us all a favor and quit coming into threads about motion gaming that you've made abundantly clear that you hate. FFS... 🙄

I am interested in the technology to a point and thought there might be something about it in here.

Grow up and just put me on ignore if it bothers you. FFS.

Meh, you aren't interested at all. Every single motion gaming thread in the past 6 months is guaranteed to have at least 4 or 5 Beev comments shitting on the technology and the future of motion gaming. It's the same exact thing every time, gets a little old after a while.

Every Kinect-related thread in the future should automatically append a disclaimer to the end of the OP: "Note: Yes, Beev and RavenSEAL hate everything about this thread. No need to post."

I am interested in what it means for future gaming, such as VR, etc. Sometimes there are little tidbits about the Wii/Move/Kinect that are relevant. I also really like what people are doing with their Kinects, like the guy that got two and set them up so you can view his room. That's cool. All current forms of motion gaming are poorly done, yet the average Joe eats it up, and that's the part that bothers me.

Also, Raven just hates on the Kinect but loves the Move. I hate them all equally 😛. No bias here.

Fair enough.

Actually all 3 motion platforms are very well done. It's particluarly surprising the Kinect works as well as it does.

I don't hate the kinect, i just can't justify there being any games that would allow microsoft to move 8m units, nevertheless actually selling such a figure.

Honestly, it's just like any new console launch, which is how Microsoft played it. There are a couple of noteworthy games while the rest is crap, but people still buy it because it's new. Plus, the marketing didn't hurt.

7.9 million of those were oprah fans.

No, but honestly. That figure seems so blown out of proportion. I'm honestly calling BS on this one. I would do the same if it was Sony claiming they sold 8m moves.

I'm not sure but, I have several 20 something ladies that work for me. They all wanted me to put on a promo at my office for them so that they could get a 360 with Kinect. They tried it at someone's house and thought it was "so much cooler than the wii".

This is Wii 2.0, people. Wii blasted through the gates and had record sales for years. Yet non-Nintendo software sales flopped hard. Very hard. Even the Nintendo Wii games that did well minimized motion control because, when people get in front of a tv, they want to relax. The main exception is party games and the like. Sony is trying hard to ingrain motion control into their traditional games but that may die too. I just don't see Kinect games being more successful than games developed for Wii.

The two best selling Kinect games (last I checked) are non-MS developed games - Dance Central and Your Shape.

And those were launch games. I'd like to see what's available next holiday to see if developers have learned anything. My guess is we'll see more dancing and exercise games...

Well, I hate to say it but exercise and dance games are the biggest natural fits for Kinect. Way moreso than the Wii.

Anyway, there will be devs in search of creative ways to use Kinect and those that will push shovelware.

I'm still interested to see "hybrid" games are in store.

I know someone who bought 2 hoping to flip them, then returned them when there was no supply shortage. Nice job to Microsoft for having 2 or 3 crates at Best Buy the day after Christmas.

People said the same thing about the Wii and I've yet to see it. Sales speak for themselves.
