they say the car was blinded by smoke. sigh... such a sad story.

I'm thinking that this little tidbit was either concocted by the police or at least being misrepresented by the police in order to build a case against the racers.

Anyone who races knows that you're not going to get traction if you burn out at launch, you do your burnout before the race to get your tires stickier. They said that the cars had already taken off, so it's doubtful that there was too much smoke.

Call me crazy, but driving around at night without headlights on sounds like a more likely cause to not see something in the road.

On the other hand, I have to wonder if the guy really had his headlights off.

That's a possibility, too.

Not sure about the "no headlights" claim either. However, after some more reading, I see that there are claims that they spectators crowded onto the freaking highway... at night...

Also, reports say they were waving/cheering the drag racing cars as they drove off. Wonder which direction the car that hit them came from...

From what I understand, two cars were participating in a race at the time of the incident. The cars passed between a large group of spectators, ranging in age from young to old, that was gathered on each side of the road. Once the racing vehicles passed the crowd, the group moved into the road to watch the final leg of the race. The white Crown Vic, that hasn't been confirmed to be participating, collided with the crowd.

Some people that were there have indicated that a few of the racing participants had paid off the local police to block the road.

Well, no one said they were racing smart... I've seen it plenty of times, burn out just to make a huge scene and "look cool." But yeah, I wonder on the timing of everything. They would have JUST had to launch and then the white crown vic plowed through.

And yeah, to reemphasize, the headlights could have been on. There seems to be way too much chaos to get a straight story.

though i don't have much sympathy for anyone out watching illegal drag racing there is no reason why a 61 yr old woldnt enjoy it

I believe the comment was geared more as why is a 61yr old out there... at 3:40AM.

If the road was blocked, how did the Crown Vic get through? 😕

If these deaths had been from yet another school shooting the tone would be much different. Looks like all deaths are not created equal.

umm... of course they're not. Some could have been easily avoided with common sense. It's definitely sad to have 8 people dead here, but was it a real bright idea to funnel onto a highway?

Thank you, captain obvious.

People lined the road to watch an illegal street race. They took a chance and some of them lost. Shame indeed.

Cops were paid to block the road. Cops didn't block the road. It wouldn't be the first time a cop didn't do what he was paid to do. 😀

My deepest condolences to those who lost their lives, but WTF was this lady thinking bringing her kid to an illegal street race at 3:40am? He almost died and now her dad is dead.

Seriously? Do people have ANY brains?
Apparently not. I think we'd probably see similar results if we'd teach a few chimps how to drive cars. Stupid, stupid primates.

Hah... if it does turn out that a cop was paid to block the road so they can street race, he can kiss his career goodbye.

What the hell kind of person walks onto a highway to watch a street race at 3:40AM? That was completely, totally irresponsible. What is almost more irresponsible is that the police were repeatedly notified of these street races THAT NIGHT, and never responded.

All around, great showing for sheer stupidity by a lot of folks.

"There were just bodies everywhere; it was horrible," said Crystal Gaines, 27, whose father was among the dead.

Gaines said she grabbed her child but could not help her father, William Gaines Sr., 61.

Someone explain this to me.... it's from the CNN article

uhhh. being innocently shot at school != being out at 3:40am watching an illegal street race and getting run over.

even making that equation is beyond douchebaggery.

Evidently the police have a sense of humor.

It's a shame....yet another road blocker will lose his job🙁
