"There were no fatalities and the Sailors are listed in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries."
"The injured Sailors were working on the flight deck at the time of the mishap."
Well considering these aircraft are going full throttle when they snag these cables it's surprising this doesn't happen often.
In case you're as confused as I was:
The cable snapped, and while whipping around the cable injured some sailors on the flight deck. The aircraft was fine - it probably caught another cable.
The cables are replaced after a specific number of 'traps'. The old cable thrown overboard. On instance on the USS Saratoga, the cable fouled one of the 4 props causing extensive damage and a trip to the yards for repair.
About the same time I was aboard the Saratoga, a sailor was cut in half by a cable on the USS America.
The flight deck of a carrier is the most dangerous 4 acres on the planet.

Did you read the article? The aircraft bolted and eventually landed on shore. (The Carrier was about 80 miles off the East Coast. All airborne aircraft from the carrier were diverted to airfields. This sucks, like skying said, "non life threatening" doesn't mean that someone didn't lose a foot or something. 🙁
the carrier got caught in its own trash 😵 ?
Dude was sharp and paying attention that day, jumped the cable as it came whipping by then took out at least two dudes who weren't paying attention.Discovery channel actually caught one snapping while filming a few years back:

Velocity.Mythbusters tried very hard to get a whipping cable to cut a pig carcass in half, but they couldn't even get it to cut into the skin, iirc.
Velocity.
I bet the pilot's pants turned brown. 😀
ground effect, it's a wonderful thing.
