I agree, you should face palm yourself until you can contribute something helpful.

OP: It means normal sized drinking glasses. At least 8 ounces. Probably more.

As for me, after 5 kidney stones I am now up to a gallon a day. Lots of fun, espcially around midnight.

They don't say cups, usually. They say 8 glasses of water per day. Usually 8oz per glass, so about 64oz a day.

ive been drinking like 4+ liters a day for years lol 8 cups is nothing

Depends on how much you exert yourself. If you get a lot of exercise, you'll need a lot of water. If not, then you have to watch out for water intoxication.

It's a myth, drink when you're thirsty.
http://www.snopes.com/medical/myths/8glasses.asp

Kidney specialists do agree on one thing, however: that the 8-by-8 rule is a gross overestimate of any required minimum. To replace daily losses of water, an average-sized adult with healthy kidneys sitting in a temperate climate needs no more than one liter of fluid, according to Jurgen Schnermann, a kidney physiologist at the National Institutes of Health.

One liter is the equivalent of about four 8-ounce glasses. According to most estimates, that's roughly the amount of water most Americans get in solid food. In short, though doctors don't recommend it, many of us could cover our bare-minimum daily water needs without drinking anything during the day.

The problem with the internet is it makes stupid people aware of stuff like this. You need to worry more about lightning strikes and ass herpes than water intoxication.

The only reason I mentioned it was because I nearly fell victim to it. I was on a training exercise in the summer with my full fighting order on (tack vest, flak vest, rucksack, helmet, etc) and I was sweating my balls off. I drank a shit ton of water to compensate it, but not enough salt/electrolytes to make up for what was lost.

Thanks guys.(cept you darkxshade :p) I usually drink a gallon or may a day, I just always had the whole 8 cups a day think in the back of my mind, wondering wtf do they mean when they say it.

Considering you're the same crack head asking about estrogen blockers in another thread then stupid does apply to you.

I'm an idiot and let myself go thirsty most of the time. Partly cause I'm cheap, partly cause the office kettle is never cleaned and water tastes like ass out of it. Still, I'm pretty sure I go well over a litre a day with 355mL of coke, and two/three mugs of whatever.

I'm just relating personal experiences. By no means am I claiming to be an expert at anything, so relax.

I'd be more worried about diabetes.

Excessive drinking without doing shit tends to be a bit of an issue

Coke is a diuretic.
It pulls water out of your body and sends it directly to the peepee hole, where it does you no good.

You get more water from coke/coffee/tea than you expel from the diuretic effect. It still counts as water ingested.

What about the water in my poopies from all that coffee. Answer me that smart-boy. And when I go peepee, it seems like lots and lots of water coming out. But it is yellow, and I never dranked anything yellow. All that water is going somewhere, and it certainly isn't back in my mouth. So, plllllllllliiiiiiiiiiii......

Hah, wow.

Many of the notions (and dubious "facts") presented in that e-mail seem to have been taken from the book Your Body's Many Cries for Water, by Fereydoon Batmanghelidj. Dr. Batmanghelidj, an Iranian-born physician who now lives in the U.S., maintains that people "need to learn they're not sick, only thirsty,'' and that simply drinking more water "cures many diseases like arthritis, angina, migraines, hypertension and asthma."
I never knew the source of that "8 glasses" thing.
That guy sounds totally legit.:D He's probably either a subscriber or contributor to "Dr." Joseph Mercola's placebo manufacturing business.

Just drink when you're thirsty. Your body is pretty smart.

The people who think they know better than their body are probably the same people who try to "tweak" Windows XP then wonder why it doesn't work anymore.

All I did was remove fat from my diet after turning off the pagefile! Why doesn't this shit work? Why do I feel so terrible??

Nah you're supposed to have about 2 glasses or so. 8 is way too much unless you're an athlete.
