8-bit 1600x1200 LCD with decent response time?

LCDs arn't quite there yet to my eyes for hardcore gaming. The closest I have seen is the 4ms grey 5 rated "19 LCD that sells for around $440. Right now the samsung 19" 8ms 700:1 contrast is popular for around $350, but even that has some backlight bleed and I personally notice some ghosting. In about 6 months, there might be "20 screens with 1000:1 and 4ms on market, hopefully within a $400 range. This might finally get LCDs up there with CRT for gaming. Nothing is on market now that compares to a good $300 CRT though.

thanks but I dont want the widescreen. hell maybe I do..who knows....but this is a gaming machine, not movie-watching.. :p but for that kind of price it is kind of tempting...now why can't they offer that without the widescreen? shouldn't that be cheaper? with all the good things i've heard about the dell 2001fp i might just go for it. do you think it will still be that cheap come Christmas time? also ghosting/motion blur with 16ms. has me worried. i have a 12ms. now (i think it's same measurement) and i see some motion blur in battlefield 2, like when in a tank and scanning for the nearest capture point, it blurs like hell and hurts my eyes a little. though response time is usually lower on larger screens so I'm not sure.

it's so hard to decide between 2001fp, 7800gtx, or athlon 64 x2 4200+. too much for me to bear!

all i know is i'm not shelling out $200+ for another huge hunk of glass...besides even my old 17" CRT can't breathe on this desk (not to mention it doesn't operate anymore for some reason), and it's still only 1280x1024.

Well, no point in getting the 7800GTX without a kickass monitor (well, maybe you could do 1280x1024 with 8XAA).

I would wait for lower prices on the X2 since you know they will eventually drop.

The LCD would last longer than the other two I imagine. If I was buying a monitor now, that's probably what I would get.

hmm i wouldn't say there's no point in it. my 6800nu struggles with doom3 at any aa/af at 1280x1024 and bf2 is about 50 fps. the overclock in my sig was just for 3dmarking...i don't want to risk my card on a daily basis... I'd prefer 80+ fps.. plus the transparency AA and H.264 acceleration is neat. plus...it's just...cool. Bring on surface-conduction emission displays!

The Dell 2001FP isn't widescreen. And I hear it's great for gaming.
Out of the 3 upgrade options you have, I'd definitely pick the LCD screen. The GTX is TOO expensive, and you already have an uber card. And your 3500+ is faster than the X2 in gaming.
btw- your 6800 NU runs Doom 3 at 1600x1200 8xAF at at least 45fps. And BF2's performance is hammered by the RAM, not by the GPU (see 1Gb vs 2Gb thread).

The Dell 2001FP is decent for gaming but can't touch a big CRT and the reason is color reproduction and response time. I went from a Compaq P1220 (20" viewable Mitsubishi Diamondtron tube) to a 2001FP and there's no comparison in games. The CRT blows away the LCD. However the LCD has its advantages - razor sharp text @ 1600x1200, smaller footprint, brighter, perfect geometry, runs cooler, uses less energy, easily positioned, portable, etc, etc. When my Compaq died I was really close to getting one of those sweet 22" NEC CRT's but I went with the LCD instead. The 2001FP isn't perfect but for the price it's pretty nice.
