7V fan mod, is is actually safe?

I dunno, it looks pretty hokey, I was thinking using some sort of resistors might be a better idea. I'm not wanting to slow down a bunch of high amperage fans or anything, but it still looks kinda hokey to me.

If you go poke around over at SilentPCReview forums you'll find that they're pretty down on it. They say that it feeds back 12V into the 5V line and that this is harmful to the PSU, especially cheap PSUs. I've gotten away from doing it and generally use those Zalman Fanmates.

I've been doing it for about three years and have yet to have a psu or fan die on me.

currently doing a 7v with a crystal orb in another computer with a ghetto psu (8A on the 12V rail). No problems yet.
