7970 Prices

litecoin. Every 7950, 7970, and 280's are sold out or out of the ballpark. You can mine like 15$ a day right now.

ah heck traded my 7970s. Time to hit my local MC. What about 290s

290s are bad for mining because they have poor cooling at the moment which causes them to overheat and forces them to throttle down the frequencies.

They would probably be OK for gaming since gaming and mining are two completely different stress levels.

What would be nice is to grab a 7990 🙂

Careful! Most 7990 cards have significant coil whine. Maybe your mining rig is far away from you so that you can maintain sanity, but i'd hesitate to get a 7990 because there are tons of reports of coil whine with it. Even the TPU, hexus, kotaku, and hardwarecanucks review made mention of how godawful the coil whine on the 7990 is, and generally most reviewers don't even discuss it even if it exists - so if a reviewer mentions it, you know it's bad. I think 280x CF or 7970 CF would be a better bet, but you can't be awfully picky since miners are buying all the cards up.

Only get the 7990 if your mining rig is far, far away and can't be heard. Coil whine is a huge issue. Since most people buying this stuff aren't gaming with it, they could take extra precautions to put the 7990 mining rigs far and away out of sight I suppose.

Great for a dedicated miner though. Allows twice the # of GPU's on the same mobo. Need plenty of airflow, though.

Well I pulled the trigger on a R9 290. Will see how it goes. I used to mine sometime back but gave up. Maybe I shouldn't have duh..

Tons of reports?Sure.

Yep, AMD is once again the victim of false propaganda. Hardwarecancuks? they lied about 7990 coil whine. So did hexus. Kotaku. Linus. TPU. All lying to get at AMD. All the user reviews on newegg, amazon, etc, all liars. 100% of everyone reporting coil whine on the 7990, paid by nvidia. Oh. All those 7990 reference boards that AMD mailed out, I guess someone from nvidia hijacked those shipments mid transit @ FedEx or UPS and artificially placed coil whine on those review boards. That's probably what happened, i'm sure. False propaganda as always, nvidia sabotaging review cards, and lying web reviewers.

I just wish someone had warned me that the dual X 7970s had horrible coil whine before I bought them, saving me the hassle of RMA. I figure I would save someone the hassle before they blew money on 7990s; generally speaking, people don't like GPUs with loud coil whine.

''Tons '' is an exaggeration.

It implies that the majority of users suffered from this.....
