Is the $550 price point fair???

  • Yes, the card performs like a $500+ one

  • No, it's very expensive given the % gap from last gen

  • I bought one and it rocks

  • I bought one and AMD needs to drop the price

It's supply and demand at work. They are priced accordingly I think. If you remember back when the 5870 and 5850 came out, they were sold at retail and the price actually continued to climb for a good long while until they finally went back to msrp. The GTX580 actually hasn't changed that much. I bought my 7970 now because I feared that they would increase in price given the demand, and I want to enjoy it as long as I can.
I did get took on my dual 6870's I bought those at around $220 a piece and now they can be had for much less...

It's sold out so I think AMD priced it right. Who knows, maybe they could have gotten away with a $600 pricetag, depending how supplies are. The 580 is an outrageous rip off now and I hope nobody is buying them over the 7970. Overclocked, the 7970 is an absolute beast. I don't think I'd buy one to keep at stock though.

I knew someone would point that out and I should have mentioned 2 words: separate accounts

As far as my fiance (soon to be wife) is concerned we have seperate accounts. these consist of...

1. "Our account"

2. and her account

$550 starting price kept me from jumping ship from my 580s (of which I paid no more than $400 for each), performance just wasn't high enough for me to justify it, and I don't like the idea of overclocking on the reference cooler.

triple slot designs like the ASUS DCII are very enticing, however I think I'm going to try and stick it out until April when we'll have Ivy for sure (which I'll definitely be swapping my 2600K for) and maybe some Kepler options to either go that way or instead go AMD.

I think they should be $19.95, just like the SlapChop.

yeah but is it $19.95 straight up, or is it 27 easy payments of $19.95? ;)

Well if you just built a new rig and wanted the best single GPU card available the cost argument is pointless and overdone at this point. I built a new rig, wanted to game, had $500, bought a 7970. Truth be told I originally wanted a 7950 but it wasn't out yet. I had about $550 for a video card and a new computer chair (old one broke) so I bought a 7970 and pulled a chair in from the dining room to use until I have more disposable income. I have a hemorrhoid but I'm still smiling because the 7970 is a great card.

I'll wait for the 2nd gen. of 28nm , water block's cost are not worth the small speed bump.
$550 is cheap today for what your getting ,some people have paid that much buying a 460 then a 560ti and never played a game close to max. settings.

I paid $600 for a 3GB MSI 580 Lightning about four months ago... $560 for a (Sapphire) stronger card that doesn't inhale the NIC in the slot below it?! I'm loving the 7970 right now, I just can't afford one.
