7970 Power Connectors Install Help

So, on a recommendation from my earlier thread I picked up the Corsair CX600 to upgrade my PSU for the incoming 7970.

Now that the parts are here, and I'm looking things over, there are two 6+2 pin PCI-E connectors from the PSU, and it looks like I need each of those to combine into one 8-pin PCI-E connector via an included adapter that came with the video card, which leaves me short one 6 pin PCI-E connector since the video card takes one 6 pin (75W) and one 8 pin (150W).

Do I have that right? Did I just get bad advice and I need a different PSU or just another adapter to utilize some other power connectors from the PSU?

Thanks for any help!

Hmmm I just plugged a 6+2 into the 8 pin slot and everything seems up to snuff... I know the extra 2 pins are just grounds but I haven't had any issues so far?? Can anyone else comment on this? Did you use a 6+2 and a 6 like me?

As far as I know the PCI-e port supplies 150 w and the 2 power connectors supply the other 150w.

I was going to do that as well, but hesitated when I saw the two 6-pin to one 8-pin PCI-E power adapter that came with my card...

What brand card did you get? I don't seem to have any additional power adapters. Maybe that is so you can only plug in the 8 pin to supply the additional 150w needed to create the 300w requirement? Either I did something wrong or I have no Idea... My card OC to 1125 with no issues at all so I assume it has all the needed power. I am hoping some other owners will chime in on their configuration.

You don't use the adapter (it's for PSUs with only 6 pin PCIE power cables). Plug the 6+2 cable into the 8 pin on videocard, and the other 6+2 cable goes into the 6 pin of the videocard (+2 is not connected).

The 6+2 is an 8 pin. The reason it is detachable is so you can use the connector in normal 6 pin connectors.

You don't need an adapter.

Thanks guys - in my frustration I have been searching for a definitive word on this and finding items like this (taken from one of the 7970 product pages) got me worried:

power supply with one 150W 8-pin PCI Express power connector and one 75W 6-pin PCI Express power connector recommended

Better safe than sorry as the saying goes!

Blame it on the power supply manufacturers. They should call the 6+2=8pin connectors anyways :)
