Is it a new stepping or same thing better binned?

This might end up like the 4890 vs 4870, in that the former featured a redesigned chip for much higher clock speed.

And yes, the choice of memory clocks will make a big difference as well, since the 7970 runs into a memory bottleneck at 1200mhz core. Supposedly, anyway.

One thing that is disappointing is that the reference fan was not redesigned. The 680 ref fan is a little better than the 7970 fan, although they're both quiet on auto settings.

I feel like a 1.5gb version of this with an improved fan at a really nice price point would sell well, (380$ maybe?) but I bet they will price it the same as current models. If its higher than current models, then that's just stupid.

I believe that this new chip is supposed to be clocked higher at lower voltages. I remember seeing something about 1100 mhz clock @ 1.04v.

Just plain higher overclocks isn't going to do a damn thing for AMD.
Higher overclock with lower voltages on the other hand can do wonders.

If this is the next 4890 type chip, it is going to be amazing.

actually, i won't be surprised if the power consuption actually lowers, since the process is more mature...

At current clocks maybe, at the speeds they'll need to beat nVidia, not going to happen. Nothing short of a die shrink and perhaps even an architectural change is going to give that kind of reduction. That said, I'm still very interested in what they're going to come up with. Power consumption doesn't really bother me, noise however does.

The 4890 was a physically different gpu than the 4870. It was a little bigger and had more transistors. This upcoming new hd7970 is not a different chip. It might have undergone a base metal layer respin, but it won't be physically different or introduce any new features. Just take an hd7970, clock it at 1100mhz, and that's it.

The single only difference is that it will have a slightly improved performance per watt ratio.

We've known since May, the existence of a new high-end single-GPU graphics card SKU in the works, at AMD. Called the Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition, the SKU is being designed to regain AMD's competitiveness against NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 680. We're hearing a few additional details about the SKU. To begin with, AMD has worked with TSMC to refine the chip design. The Tahiti XT2 will be able to facilitate significantly higher clock speeds, at significantly lower voltages, than the current breed of Tahiti XT chips.

Tahiti XT2, or Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition, will ship with a core clock speed of 1100 MHz, 175 MHz faster than the HD 7970. The GPU core voltage of Tahiti XT2 will be lower, at 1.020V, compared to 1.175V of the Tahiti XT. It's unlikely that AMD will tinker with memory clock speed, since Tahiti already has a 384-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, which gives it 264 GB/s memory bandwidth at 1375 MHz (5.50 GHz effective). According to the source, the new SKU enters mass-production next week. So best case, it should reach markets by late-June or early-July.
hehe, empire strikes back :p

If the rumors are true and AMD is releasing it at 1.1GHz with a significantly lowered voltage, then it will be quite an improvement.

Well, if the voltage is that low power consumption should be much better...even better for bitcoin mining...may have to pick up one of these at some point.

Next memory technology will incorporate wider busses via interposers probably. Think 512-1024bit interfaces.
