One thing I'm not sure is clear about the 7950GX2 (to me at least) is whether or not it requires an SLI motherboard. I have a DFI Ultra-D which has 2x PCI-E slots but doesnt support SLI, would the 7950GX2 (just one of them, obviously) work on my setup?

It does not require a sli mobo but one thing certain is that it requires an update to your mobo's bios to work.

SLI on an ATI Chipset

Yep, that is cool. These guys actually benched it with the A8R32-MVP Deluxe, although they didn't seem to have any luck with the Tyan K8WE dual Opty board, which is on the list as well: http://www.avault.com/hardware/print_review.asp?review=nv7950pre

Looking at the Motherboard Compatibility List I saw several items that I own. The first board I tried the card on was the Tyan S2985 AKA Thunder K8WE. This board is on the list but I could not get it to post.

The second board I tried was not on the list and is the Asus K8N-DL. This is also a dual Opteron board using the nForce 2200 chipset but does not support SLI. I was pleasantly surprised to see the system post but it would not recognize the PCI E bridge that requires a driver.

The next motherboard on the list that I turned to was the Asus K8N32-SLI. This is the board that most of the reviewers will be using tomorrow so I wanted to see something different and that left the Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe. This is actually an ATI CrossFire 3200 motherboard and I thought it would be interesting to see how well the card would test on it. There are many rumors going around right now about which boards will work and many people have stated that you will need an SLI compliant motherboard but this is not true. If you look at the list you will see many non-SLI and Intel chipset boards listed.
