What rez? I can run FEAR with a 7900GT with soft shadows at 75FPS
12x10. i had a 7900gt. Oblivion murdered it. I had a defective 7900gt though, so that maybe why. And for some reason my fps would cap at 30fps for some reason which really sucked.
And i didn't mean max shadows...i should say have max object drawing like trees/grass/objects WHEN you have tree shadow/grass shadows enabled.
woulda been around the same price with a rebate.

and the XTX is better judging by AT's review.
if you have the settings cranked all the way up and have high IQ settings in the control pannel...the game won't be playable in areas with alot of trees and grass.
i'm sure if you lowered the draw distances of trees and grass, and turned of grass shadows you will still be seeing low fps at that resolution probably, but it will be alot more playable.
My experience with oblivion (which isn't alot of time because i just got the game before i RMAd my 7900gt) is that it is still fairly playable at quite low fps.
it is an LCD, and they have native resolutions, so it often looks funky not playing in their native resolution.
For me and my 19" BenQ, CSS looks VERY ugly in anything besides 12x10(LCD)
If i can remember correctly, BF2 looked good in both 12x10 and 10x7 resolutions. But battlefield games don't support widescreen resolutions anyways. I also beieve oblvion looked fine in 10x7.
But remember, you are on a widescreen monitor...and i haven't had experience with widescreens. I think they have different resolutions to choose in most games, but i could be wrong.
As for running a low res like 800x600 on a LCD with a native resolution that high..it will look quite distorted unless you run it in windows mode.
I can't guarantee everything i stated their, but you will WANT to play in your LCDs native resolution for best visuals.

The only reason I can see going 7950GT right now over the X1900XT is EVGA's step-up program with the hope that G80 will be out in less than 3 months.

you'd likely have to leave HDR off, and have no/min. AA and medium settings.
most other games it should be fine, but if you play a lot of oblivion, not sure why you would go nvidia, at least in this generation.
better warranty? quieter? cooler? most people either originally have an SLI board over an Xfire board so it gives them the option to go SLI when the holiday seasons come and get another one for a present? less driver problems?
i have nothing against ATi cards, but there are ALOT more reasons to get one over the x1900xt besides eVGAs step plan.

You can. Both the 7650 & 7950GT's are drop in replacements for the 7600 & 7900GT's. Expect a few articles confirming it in the coming few weeks.
heh.. well, since others turned this into yet another ati/nv comparison, but some other reasons to go with the 7950 over say, a 1900xt 256mb is that the 7950 is slower, costs more, and doesn't offer some of the superior IQ options that ati does (concurrent AA/HDR and HQAF).
why someone who puts importance into Oblivion would purchase and nv product this gen is beyond me. the the 256mb XT also beats the 7950 in games which used to favor nvidia:

while i do agree SLI is certainly an advantage for Nvidia (both in ease of use and the fact many already have SLI capable mainboards), it's likely a single g8 gpu will outperform this gen SLI and be more cost effective (and hopefully g80 will also offer the superior IQ modes which ATI offers today).
and the evga stepup program sucks 😛
