7950 low peroformance

I am getting higher frame rates with 7950 only in just cause 2.the only game that plays fine here.

And in other games, like dirt2 dirt3 and most games i used to play before, it is not about frame rates, i'ts about a high cpu usage which makes the screen moves no smooth..(also i saw some bad textures and some squares in graphics for a moment in duke nukem for ever)..

and finally i saw (once) the message for cpu over temperature.. it is because this card wants a better cpu to cooperate with? or because of bad supply from the psu(it is 2,5 years old, and 550watt [thermaltake tr2])...i dont know i maybe think to get a 6970 to fit better in this system, or i can just change psu to keep 7950..if i can i will try to make it fit and play fine.

Anyway as about cpu temp with prime 95:
70-75 C with 0% or small load, and 98C with full load...

I know it is a good test, but unfortunately i can't for now.thats why i am looking for it..i'll do it as soon as i can

i hope everything to be solved with a new psu.. but i definitely would like to know(if somebody knows, he is welcome )if i dont have a chance, cause this card works with better or other cpus, or if there is problem with this and my motherboard)

in a few words.. can bad power supply from the psu, make cpu goes to so high temperature?
if the answer is yes, psu change is a nice idea to make things right here. if not....

I have noticed this most often happening in SFF builds, where power is at a premium. Peripherals appear to drop-off first (optical drives, HDDs, ect), while GPU and CPUs will function intermittently or at a reduced capacity.

If you have a good buddy that you could borrow a PSU from, give that a shot. Otherwise, you could try picking-up a new PSU, and trying that. Worst case is that isn't the issue and you could either keep it or return it. Would at least help you narrow down the issue.

Just for information , i i tried another game witch uses about 40%of cpu, it runs fine, but cpu temperature again goes up to 98C..

If your CPU is indeed overheating, that would explain the high CPU. As it will throttle itself down, so instead of running at xGhz, it will run at a much lower yGHz. Meaning your CPU usage will show up as being much higher.

I tried dirt2 again. i ran the benchmark, in the first minutes where temperature was not so high, it run smoothly and fine! but when the temperature went up to 96C, clock speed turned down, and it slowed up again..

At least i know that it the problem is not the card..
At first i 'll try to clean my fan, then try a new psu as soon as i can..

the only thing is that i have one thought that because it is a new card, it cant cooperate with this cpu or this motherboard..

Definitely CPU overheating. You were GPU bottlenecked before your upgrade, so your CPU utilization wasn't as high as it is now. The upgrade removed GPU bottleneck with that CPU. Now that your CPU usage peaks at 99%, the temperature will severely throttle your CPU speed.

Definitely check out that heatsink and fan, maybe even remove it and apply some fresh TIM.

or it can be caused by bad supply from psu. in a few words this card will work that way in my system and i dont have a chance even if a change psu? I really dont know..

i'll do my tests but i am making my thoughts and i hope you can understand how i feel.. i just bought this card, i know it is good, and i expect more...not crazy things about fps, normal things.just want to play everything.

I would check to see if your heat sink is free of dust first. And be sure the fan on it is in good shape.

You need to clean the heat sink on the CPU, make sure the fans are working and even take the heat sink off and apply some new thermal compound. Then monitor the temperatures.

No CPU temp will not be caused by anything other than a bad heatsink or heatsink mount. Your video card or PSU would not cause that kind of overheating. Fix the overheating problem very quickly...you don't want to fry your chip. On a stock heatsink it should be in the 65-75C range I believe WHEN it is at 100% load. If you are already at that temp with 0% load then there is a serious problem with the cooling.

You may still have an underlying power supply issue which the installation of the 7950 has brought out, might be why your second HDD won't recognize like it did before.

Did you try simply reseating the cables that go to the HD?

You might have knocked them loose when you were poking around in there.

The other thing i would check is if the HD is vibrating when you start up the pc. Just gently touch the outside case of the HD when you power the PC on and feel for vibration. This will tall you if the HD if powered or not.

If you feel nothing, the power plug is bad and likely just has a break in the wire, use a different power plug. If you feel it power on, it is likely the SATA cable is loose or one of the SATA connectors on the motherboard died.

Those are the easy checks, let me know if you need more help with the HD.
