7950 GT SLI versus a single HD 4670

Hey everyone.

I currently run two passively cooled XFX 7950 GT eXtreme cards in SLI mode to power my dell 24" display at 1920x1200.

Anyone have any idea how the current generation midrange card like the HD 4670 would stack up against a high end configuration from over three generations ago for high resolution gaming?

Thoughts/links to benchies appreciated.

4670 will perform better and be less buggy. However, it's not much better. At the very minimum, I'd upgrade to a 4830 or 4850.

Another vote for the 4830. Especially at that price. I paid $99 and i feel like i got a good deal.

You might see a dip in performance, in some if not all titles. No point in upgrading to anything less than a Geforce 9800 or Radeon 4800 series graphic card.

To see a huge boost go for a 4870 or above, even a 4850 should be a decent increment.

The HD4670 is a very nice card, but it seems intended for those who buy off the shelf PC's with less than capable PSUs (300 watt and less). For instance, the HD 4670 runs excellent in my Compaq with a 250w PSU. Good, solid framrates that competes with 9600GSO and HD 3850 in most situations. However, my Compaq would die if I put a 4830 or 9600GT in it.

If you have a nice PSU and the power to go with it, you are better off getting the HD 4830, 4850 or 4870 if you can afford it (or even a GeForce 9600GT or 9800GT).

Assuming good SLI scaling, a 7950GT is about on par with a 7900GTX, and an HD4670 will be a bit slower than the HD2900XT, it looks like they may perform about the same, although I'd give the edge to the HD4670 for better minimum framerates and playability. Of course, if you don't have good SLI scaling the HD4670 will be noticeably faster. However, if you are gaming the 19x12, you are better off with an HD4800 or 9800 series video card than the HD4670. It would be well worth the increase in price over the 4670, and if your power supply can handle two 7950GTs then it should work fine any HD4800 card.

I wish I could find 7900 SLI benchmarks, but I don't think anyone is going to have them with newer cards on the market with the latest drivers and the latest games.

If you want something cheap get the HD4830 minimum. But I would recommend if you have the money an HD4870 or even an HD4870X2

Your 7950GTs in SLI is alot faster than a cruddy, low-end 4670. Upgrade to 2 8800GTs in SLI like I did. I also had 2 BFG 7950GTs in SLI.:thumbsup:

I found that doubtful, considering that the HD 4670 is as fast as the HD 3850 512MB and sometimes it can rival and outperform the HD 3870 when FSAA is used.
