7900Gto to 8800gts, worth it?

I currently have a 7900GTO w/512mb ram.
My friend just upgraded to a 5850 and is "tossing" his 8800 gts w/320mb ram.

Is it worth taking? I game at 1680x1050 normally with AA off and AF on. Mainly play WoW and various FPSs. Proc is an Opty 165 @ 2.5ghz.

Take the 8800 GTS if he's giving it away for free. Keep THE 7900GTO as a backup card but I think the performances between the two isn't that big if memory serves me right. The 8800 also supports DX10 while the 7900 only supports DX9. The lower amount of RAM will affect games if you play at higher resolutions but shouldn't make much of a difference at 1680x1050.

What I would do is take the 8800 GTS and overclock it. Stock is 500mhz core and 800mhz memory. Should be able to overclock the core to roughly 600mhz and the memory to roughly 950mhz.

Check out the benchmarks in this review:

8800GTS 320MB beats out the 7900GTX in nearly every case.
7900GTX is faster than the 7900GTO.

Draw your own conclusions.

The op's only gaming at 1650x 1050 and that review is for 1900x1200. The 8800gts would widen that lead at his lower res.
Another thing to remember is with newer games (unlike that review) the xtra shaders of the 8800gts would shine even more.🙂

I went from a 7950GT to an 8800GTS 512 a long time ago. I wondered the same at the time, whether it was worth it or not. Honestly, the real world difference is more than what you see in the benches. It's not just a matter of clear-cut FPS. Shaders helped a ton, AA seemed like it cause WAY less of an FPS hit, and the gaming experience on the same games vs. the 7950 was just overall a lot more enjoyable for me.

Might not make sense to you, but it's how I saw it when I made a similar upgrade.

If you can get the 8800 cheap, definitely go for it.

I also did that upgrade while playing WoW. I can tell you that is one game you will see virtually no improvement in with the VGA upgrade.

I went from a 7800 GT to a GTS 320 - absolute night and day.

There wasn't a game that came out that I couldn't play at reasonable settings with the 320 (even the Crysis demo). I still have it as my back up card.

The 320 is the most wrongfully villified card in gaming history.

You can't say no to free 😛. While the 320MB of RAM might limit you in some games, the extra horsepower the 8800GTS GPU provides more than makes up for it.

take it definitely. i had an opteron 170 @ 2.6Ghz with an 8800GTS 320MB and it handled everything i threw at it, including wow at 1920x1200 with everything cranked, and even crysis at low settings.
