opinions? seems like the 7800GTX would best the 7900GT in alot of scenarios and only come close or be beaten narrowly by the 7900GT in a few scenarios.

7900GT.
The core is EXACTLY the same (well almost, its a die shrink) and runs faster (550+ vs. ~500), OC's better (reaches 600 on core most of time), has better memory (most reach 1800mhz), must I continue?

Now if your talking about the 7800GTX 512, then I'd still choose the 7900GT as it OC's to GTX512 speeds yet runs cooler.

THE ONLY THING(S) I'd choose over a 7900GT would be a 7900GTX or a X1900XT(X).

Edit: and your title says "of", shouldn't it say "or"?

From everything I've read, the 7900GT is just as fast, yet OC's better and runs cooler. Simple choice from that perspective.

I'm not sure how you figured the 7800gtx would beat the 7900gt, because the 7900gt has 24 pipes as well, and it's clocked slightly higher than the 7800gtx. If anything, the 7900gt would edge out the 7800gtx in most if not all cases. And it would run cooler, and most likely OC higher.

the 7900gt is 450 mhz not 550 and the 7800gtx is 430 mhz not 500. where did you pull that info from?? yes the 7900gt also has better memory and is faster than the 7800gtx. i agree with you that the 7900gt would be the card to get. the 7800gtx512 would be a horrible investment.

Yea, GTX256 vs GTX512 is night and day, GTX 512 ~ 7900 GTX, GTX 256 ~ 7900 GT

Correct. The GTX 512 was released with that name because Nvidia stated they planned on keeping the GTX as the designation for the High card. Otherwise they would have named it the Ultra like they had in every other gen (cept the original Geforce, Geforce 3 (which if I remember was only one card till the Geforce 4 came out (which got the TI numbering sceme))).

I'm talking typical OC speeds. (plus the 7900GT Superclock runs at those speeds :p)

There are subtle differences. Its a die shrink (less transistors too) hence it runs cooler and requires less power. (requires LESS than a X1800GTO at LOAD!!)

Also, they tweaked the ROPs of the G70 core meaning increased performance using HDR on G71/73/72.

Another thing to note is shortened pipelines of the G71. This increased dynamic branching up to 50% compared to G70.

So i suggest you get the 7900GT. It also OCes like mad thanks to its 90nm lowk process.
