a.) You had already spent the money and had the card, unfortunately it was completely defective and you somehow did not realise that.
b.) The Zalman VF900-Cu is not "questionable" cooling, it's easily on-par with the Arctic Accelero and Thermaltake coolers, and is cheap as dirt at £25. You decided to downgrade instead of making that investment, and that's your choice, but I don't agree with it.
