I just installed my new 7900gt and looking at the cooling solution compared to the 7900gtx has me questioning why? Is there such a desparity that that monster on the 7900gtx is needed or is it just marketing.

I have the eVGA 7900GT CO and my old Leadtek AGP6600GT had a more beefy heatsink fan on it. But getiing back to the 7900gt and the 7900GTX! What gives?

i suppose it's a both

the gtx is clocked MUCH higher than the gt is
so the humongous heatsink can be used to cool both the core and the mem while doing a little marketing as well (looks quite nice and sophisticated!)

I think they just wanted to differentiate the GTX from the GT as much as possible. Considering how high some card companies are factory overclocking their cards on that puny GT cooler, I doubt the GTX really needs its big cooler, although it's certainly nice to have it.

Mostly marketing but since some of the GTX are factory clocked to 700mhz I can see why they would use it. Either way strap on a 3rd party cooler and see if there is a vcore mod for the GT and you will be able to get the GTX clocks easily I would say.

I wait this long to upgrade from my agp6600gt and buy this 7900gt and i'm still not happy because of the cooler. My temps idle at 40c and rivatuner has yet to support it so... Whatever I'll just keep it I only got 7400 3D05 score. I think thats low for the card.
