7900 GTX? Worth it or just get 7900 GT?

The difference in price is absurd, but you usually get what you pay for. I am pretty set on the 7900GTX from eVGA, but it seems they are out of stock everywhere. What is the difference between an eVGA card and PNY, BFG, or XFX, aside from the manufacturer?

is eVGA worth the pricetag that goes with the name?
 
I'll let you know whether it's worth it if I ever get my 7900GTX non-uber OC version stepped up from my EVGA 7800GTX =^)

Reviews vs. the X1900XTX series haven't been very encouraging, though. If I had a last gen board now like 6x00 something I'd probably try to hold off and see what happens in the next few months with either new releases or prices. That said, if there's a game out NOW that you can't play and your GPU is holding you back, find the best deal you can and just pull the trigger!
 
I would not be opposed to an x1900xt either, but I was planning on getting an Asus A8N32-SLI board, as opposed to the A8R32-MVP.

Have they worked out the issues with the ASUS A8R32-MVP board?
 
I was in the same boat as you except i had bothe the 7900gtx and he x1900xt. got rid of the 7900gtx cus of the price

Not really. I've always used ATI, and have nothing against them. I am just running a 9600xt right now and definitely want a top end card for my new machine. Actually, My planned build looks alot like yours. Here is my plan:

Gigabyte 3d Aurora Case
ASUS A8N32-SLI
AMD Opteron 170
OCZ Powerstream PSU
2x1GB OCZ Platinum
74GB WD Raptor
300GB WD SATA II
X-Fi Extreme Music
Klipsch ProMedia 5.1 Ultra Speakers
2005FPw Dell monitor

and then video card...was planning on 7900GTX, but X1900XT would work also. If it runs ok on that board, that may be the route that I choose to go. I just didn't know about the compatibility of the ATI card on the Nvidia chipset board.

Get this X1900XT instead. The X1900XT is just as fast as the Geforce 7900GTXs if not faster in some cases and is cheaper than a 7900GTX. I have an X1900XT and I love it. The X1900XT is a little loud, though, so you might want to consider that. My X1900XT runs at 60C Idle and 79-80C under full load.

why not get the XTX model for a couple bucks more? higher clock speed.
 
If you plan on only having one card, I'd probably go with a X1900XT over a 7900GTX. If you're set on getting a 7900GTX and don't mind overclocking/voltmodding, I'd save some $ and get a 7900GT instead. I'm feeding mine 1.3v and basically nipping at the heels of a GTX now by running 640/870.

There should be no compatibility issues running an ATi card on an Nvidia chipset or vice versa. You just won't be able to do SLI or Crossfire without their respective boards.

evga is the best video card company IMHO because they offer lifetime warranty even if you use aftermarket cooling. their customer service is great... and their step up program rocks.

what about the fact that it only has 16 pixel pipelines?
 
X1900XT all the way. It's in a totally different league than the 7900GT. Oblivion on this card, compared to a 7900, is no comparison.
 
At the resolution you will be running, the 7900GT will do just fine.

Unless you really want to spend the extra money to run max settings.

If you have been using a 9600 this long the GT will be a huge advance.

It has 48 pixel shaders and 16 separate texture units. In a traditional sence, a pipe has one of each. The x1900's dont use traditional pipes.

They do run hot but all the air is exhausted out of the back so case temps have actually dropped for a lot of people. Mine's never had an issues due to heat and I don't recall anyone else either. It's a great card.

OMG only 16 pipes. LOL. What about the fact that AMD cpu's are "only" running at 2ghz when an Intel can be had for the same price with a "whopping" 3ghz? *sigh*

As for a out of stock 7900GT for $359 being the best bang for your buck, I disagree. With the X1800XT sporting similar performance to the 7900GT for $282 on Newegg, That's the best bang for your buck in the mid range at least. What's more, it's in stock so you can actually buy it.

Are you dead set on the A8N? I had it, and its a great board, no doubt about it. Asus now has the A8R out, which is pretty much the same thing, but the ATi version. It runs cooler, and overclocks better. Lets you keep 5x, where as on my A8N, had to lower it to 3x. Better placement of the PCI slots, CMOS reset jumper, and SATA ports. AT has a nice review of it, the A8R-MVP is an outstanding board.

 
the x1900xt is the best deal out there now (lest you find a deal on an XTX, though usually with the aid of a damn rebate).

that seems like a great deal. Think about the price difference. Not to mention its EASILY OCed to XTX speed...though it makes very little difference.

BTW, I have the A8R32 and have had no issues with it. I immeidiately installed the latest bios. Seems all the complaints were initial release one's.

it's either the A8N32-SLI or the A8R32-MVP....and the MVP board is just to new still for me to buy it.
