7900 GT sli or 1 7900 GTX

what is faster? 2 7900 GT or 1 7900 GTX? Right now, i have a 7900 GTX but im not really impressed with it. Don't see a difference from my 7800 GTX 256mb. 2 7900 GT or 1 7900 GTX cost the same and i would definitely want the one that is faster
 
7900GT SLi is an easy choice here..anyway just wait a few hours many ATiers will come and tell u that x1900xtx is better with some oblivion beches provided and some will ask why not X1800XT CrossFire..well..its the same thing that happens in every thread
 
I'd highly recommend you sell your 7900GTX for around $500-550 (high demand, low availability, high selling price) and pick up an X1900XT. You'll experience far better performance in shader heavy games like Oblivion, equal performance/slightly better performance in almost all other games, and better image quality with feature such as HDR+AA. Besides, you can get an X1900XT for $420~.

Sorry by my ignorance, just getting into SLI/CF. So one X1900XTX is equal to or better than 2x7900GT SLI?

hey, go nuts. get 2 7900GTs, volt mod them, and enjoy your new found CPU limitation.....

The XTX isnt worth the cost. you only get a fraction more performance for a lot more cost over the XT. also, dont go crossfire. IMO, its not mature enough yet, and of course, your motherboard doesnt support it.

Maybe in 5% of the cases where the extra ram helps, but in everything else its slower.
 
Since performance seems to be fairly close from what I'm hearing I'd let cost dictate my decision of wether 2 x 7900GT or 1 7900GTX. If you already have the 7900GTX just stay with it till the next series comes out (8000?). Same can be said if you already have 2 x 7900GT. Keep them until the next series of cards comes out. I dont think the performance differences really justify all the cost of card changing/switching. The performance gains arent that much really.
 
You already have a 7900GTX, I'd just stick with it...I've never thought of the SLI and Crossfire solutions as good because they don't give a 100% performance boost for double the cost. The 7900GTX is kinda like an overclocked 7800GTX in performance and features.

There's also the added quirks and issues with having SLI. Not to mention added heat and power drain. The X1900XT is the better card, not to mention cheaper, though it does suck up more juice and is noisier. Performance wise, the X1900XT is about on par with the 7900GTX thought it performs a bit worse in OpenGL games. However, for games that are DirectX based the X1900XT is about equal or in cases better than the 7900GTX. Not by a lot but better.

Overall, if you have either a 7900GTX or X1900XT, there really is no reason to go get a different video card.
 
I did something similar twice several months ago.
I sold my x800xt PE and went 6800GT SLI.
I also sold my 7800GTX KO and went 7800GT SLI.
I was disappointed both times, and I promised myself I would never ever go SLI again.

What resolutions are you playing at? Multi card solutions benefit high resolutions mainly in my experience, with or without AA/AF for that matter.

I have a voltmodded XTX running at 735/841 and I have to run oblivion at 1280x1024 in order for the framerate to be constently above ~25 fps outdoors. I think 2 cards would be better depending on what you're aiming to run, especially if you voltmod them.
 
I had a 7800GTX and sold it so I could buy two 7900GTs. I've read that at high resolutions SLI really makes a difference, so this is perfect for me. I only have one 7900GT right now, but it already performs better than the 7800GTX, so I am very satisfied.
 
i just returned my 7900 GTX and ordered 7900 GT SLI. Hope i will see a diff in performance. I just don't want to see bf2 fps dropping to 40 and lower. That is all i ask, high min framerates. I absolutely hate it when it drops to 40 and lower.

It seems that it is impossible to make bf2 run well. I upgraded my pc so many times just to make bf2 run better with very little success.

7900GT SLI would be faster, but also far more expensive @ at least $600. AND it wouldnt be much faster, if you dont include overclocking. Besides, the X1900XT has features you cant even get with Quad SLI- such as HQAF and HDR+AA.

What settings/tweaks are you running?? Cause at 1280x1024 with HDR and the uGridstoLoad tweak at 9 and several other tweaks I don't drop below 25fps even outside.

Are you running the chuch patch with HDR +AA?? Your XTX at those speeds should be able to handle the game with ease at 1280x1024.

Hm...I run 1280x1024 with max everything on my 6800nu clocked from 325/600 stock to 425/800 rock solid and I don't drop below 35-40. EVAR!

However, where do you enable HDR? I don't see that option, but I'm running the latest 1.22...is that specific to only some maps like in Counter-Strike: Source?
 
I like 7900GTX SLI personally.

The GTX is more quiet than the lower end GT and any ATI card. Plus for SLI its perfect as it exhausts all the hot air out the back, much better solution if you are going to be running SLI IMO.

Nothing wrong with 7900GT SLI at all. Just my opinion that I like the dual slot cards for SLI, and they are noticably quieter than any other card on the market, while hanging with the X1900XTX with a single card and GTX SLI is very viable because of the popularity of the Nforce platform and no expensive master cards, you just buy two expensive GTXs 😛

GT SLI is a great way to go though if you dont care enough about dual slot cooling, quieter SLI operation, a cooler case (as it exhausts all the hot air out the back), having higher performance or 512MB cards.

Since Vista is delayed, I decided to splurge for the GTX personally. Otherwise was going to stick with a GT.

It does not exhaust out of the case. The fan simply blows air down onto the heatsink. Any air that does go out can also easily be pulled back in.

The X1900 cards do exhaust out, actually blowing the air out.

As was the case with the 7800GTX-512 hot air is exhausted into the case...
