7800GTX prices.

Well, I've seen people say the the 600$ 7800gtx is a good buy because it's equal to a 800$/1000$ SLI setup. So, when the next gen comes out and will be just like a SLI 7800GTX it will have a 700$ price, and then 800$, and then 900$ and on and on. Really, people miss the point that older gen (6800U) were over priced also. a 500$ price tag? So, people forget that it's over priced and instead say that if I don't want to buy a 600$ graphics card it's because I don't have enough money. BS, a 600$ graphics card isn't worth it. People are just buying the new cards thanks to last-gen's over priced prices, and thanks to the cards evolution they make it seem that the 7800GTX is an ok price... Meh, I see more people are moving from PCs to consoles... Oh, read 3.

If you cant understand my English-summary:
1) last-gen's prices were too high
2) this-gen's prices are based on last gen's prices. This makes the new prices seem like a bargain, when they are actually too high
3)This will go on until cards will cost 1000$? 2000$? People will always buy these cards no matter the price. I've seen how people here were "What 600$ OMG! I won't buy that" to OMG it's already in my rig woo.

This is the way technology goes. Just think about how complex this thing is! Right up there with a processor, and way more tansistors and such! It is a miracle they don't cost a mint when compared to processors....

lol, and with that <yawn> for me to... 😉

Base price on transistor count is nonsense unless there is a serious yield issue involved. Ultimately it goes back to the supply and demand curve.

I'm just sick of seeing people who already have very good rigs (that anybody else would be grateful to have) go out and buy the latest greatest technology just to say, "Oh, I have the best." For example, one guy on HardOCP already had two 6800 Ultra 512MB's in SLI, and now he's getting two 7800GTX for SLI. It's justs sickening. Can't that money be spent better elsewhere in life?

are you talking about Rollo?

Well, I consider him one of them, but there are people who are far worse. I mean, there was one post where I read about a guy who said he had to "pull" his 1GB of Patriot PDP XBL 2-2-2-5 "out of the closet" because it was getting "dusty". That's some very good RAM and he's acting like it's nothing special.

Some people have money to burn (hence don't value it much). Some don't. Life sucks eh.

i dunno, its his money. hell i think 25k is a waste for a country club membership, but thers a waiting list to join. i spend a grand a year plus tailgating to see my beloved , need i add, world champion, patriots play. its all what you enjoy.

I spend thousands a year on guitars and amps and other equipment. I like that better than computers. To each his own. If you get a hard on by having the latest and greatest hardware then more power to you.

Almost Done -
Mobo - A8N-SLI Premium
3700+ San Diego + XP-90 - Panaflo 92mm L1A
RAM - 2GB (2x1GB) Corsair XMS PC3200 C2PT
GPU - X850XT (possibly 7800GTX if in time)
WD Raptor 74GB SATA (have)
LiteOn Combo Drive (have)

Thermaltake Tsunami (have)
Accessories (lights, mouse, keyboard) (have)

Someone who has a 2gig P4 and 9800 pro could say the same thing to you.

Yeah, but at least guitars and amps don't degrade in value over time. Now that's one thing I WILL spend my money on. I love my guitars and amps.

Yeah, and right now I currently have a 1.5GHz P4 and a 9800 Pro with 256MB of SDRAM. It's taken me over a year to get where I am on this rig. Notice the things that say "have" next to it. My point is not against those who have great hardware, it's those who always have to have the best of hardware, ie those who already have a 6800U SLI setup who just bought two more 7800GTX's. This computer that I'm trying to finish in my sig is one that I will keep for another couple of years, and possibly then some.

Well considering ATI has nothing to compete ATM, NV can charge as much as they like until they do... That is one reason why I think MSRP is 599 right now. Once ATI releases thier new card I think we might see a price drop.

Look at what ATI is saying today the mix of the PC card buisiness shifted to low-margin mid-range cards, It is not an issue of lack of supplies of hi-end cards at this time. A lot of people after E3 said... heck why upgrade, I will grab an XBOX 360... soon for less moeny.
Also in the IC industry with each move say from 110 to 90nm process, the cost of a bigger chip will remain the same...yields should get better peformance will increase and less heat is generated too. it is a win-win.... It does not cost more to fab such card, it is only an incremental R&D cost. And, since ATI or nvidia has both the competenccy to re-design their chips quickly, the R&D cost is not that too big.

I would say ATI has a new novel Unfied Shadder design with the XBOX chip.. That is a big R&D project. next Windoz (Longhorm) will use such Architecture... nVidia will follow suite soon. ATI will lead for a while.

I dont mean to be rude, but who are you to tell someone how to play a game? My res is 1920x1200, not a yesteryear res of 1024x768. I need power to get good frames. Simple as that.

I also am seriously thinking about just getting a next gen console with one of these new high quality tv's (or whatever they are called now). Computers have taken a real jump in price with not a huge gain (except possibly for the newest games coming out).

Just think how much the new 7800GTX would be if availability was extremely limited!
It could be worse, much worse. Instead of the cards selling for MSR price, there would a hell of a lot of price gauging goin on.

People, quit wimpering. If you can't afford it, wait till it falls into yopur price point. Someday, they will be $35 used in the forsale trade forum.

You're still not getting my point Ackmed. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with getting a 7800GTX. There is something wrong if you already have a 6800 Ultra SLI setup and now you are buying a 7800GTX though. Nevermind, I'm tired of arguing with a fool. Just pretend I never said anything...

Wow, you dont get you way, and resort to name calling, and childish ranting.

You will fit right in here!

If people have money, more power to them. If they want SLI 7800GTX's, then so be it. Not everyone plays at a low res.

Yes, name calling. You called me a fool.

Lets look into this part of your post.
There is something wrong if you already have a 6800 Ultra SLI setup and now you are buying a 7800GTX though.

Since the GTX is about as fast as a 6800U SLI setup, yet much quieter, much cooler, and much less hassle, while being cheaper, it seems it would be foolish to not sell the 6800U setup, and get a 7800GTX. But hey, thats just common sense.

But as you want, Ill forget you posted anything. Thread over.

Ackmed you are correct! It IS wise to SELL the 6800U setup. But I'm talking about those who don't even sell their old hardware!

BTW, the statement, "I'm not arguing with a fool" is an old saying. It's not like I'm actually name calling out of immaturity. It's just part of the saying. Anyways.

And R & D costs.

I guess we should spend money rationally. Spending like Mike Tyson is not rational. Buying a 7800GTX is not irrational unless you have to go in debt to get it.
Nonetheless I think $600 is overpriced, let's just hope that nVidia will release a $300 version of 7800 for the rest of us... or maybe we'll have to wait for ATI.
