Well, think about it from a business perspective: Nv knows the r580 is coming out soon, and they're probably busy working on a newer card to compete with it. Why should they waste money and resources on a card that they know full well will not hold the performane crown much longer? I know this sounds "evil" and "unethical", but they're in business to make money, not win the Miss America pageant. Simply release a press edition card to claim the performance crow, sell out the binned inventory they've been stockpiling for months to rabid enthusiasts at overinflated prices to claim day 1 availability, and then just forget the whole thing, moving forward with development of upcoming products.
Another thought: Since the r520 was delayed, then that would mean the 512gtx was also delayed in relation to the next product cycle. If Ati and Nv will both release new high-end products in early 2006, there's no way they can expect to sell the x1800 for $600 or the 512gtx for $700+ when the new products are launched (unless we're about to have a new $900+ single card market). Since the profit margin will be a lot smaller, why spend the resources producing these products? Ati needs the x1800, but technically Nv doesnt "need" the 512gtx for anything except to claim the performance crown.
aye, thats a qft.
stoneburner, i don't think i worded my last post properly but i wasn't saying you were playing both sides of the inq fence.
