Looking for the configuration that will last me longer. Other system specs are as follows:

Opteron 165 2.52GHz @ 1.3v
DFI Lanparty SLI-DR
G.Skill 2GB DDR 460 2.5-3-3-7
Audigy 2 ZS
Seagate 300GB 7200.8 SATA
Enermax Liberty 500W

I currently own a MSI 7800GTX, benches are as follows:
3DMark2001 SE- 30281
3DMark05- 8894

Also, there was a test done over on DFI-Street on 16x vs 8x bus on a 7800GTX, it appears that the GTX uses up all that 8x and then some as seen in the tests. Question then is, does anyone know if a single 7800GT uses up that bandwidth as well. Since that would determine what configuration I would be going with.

x1900xt beats the crap out 7800gt and takedown 7800GTX and beats a 2x 7800gt :) As for x1900xtx are cherry picked so they overclock good like 740/840

Can't afford an X1900XTX, on a limited budget. What I would be doing is trading my GTX for a GT + Cash, then putting that cash towards the purchase of another GT.

The 7800GT Sli setup will be quite a bit faster than a single 7800GTX. If you can make it happen within your budget, go for it.

Don't worry about the PCI-E reverting to 8x in Sli mode. You won't be hitting any theoretical PCI-E bus bandwidth issues at 8x vs. 16x with a 7800GT Sli setup.

No, I want to be done throwing money into my machine for at least a year. So last choice is now to do 2xGTs or one GTX.

that's a better plan, and with talk of the G71 being around the corner more options might come available, i would hold on to the 7800gtx.

That's just it, I'm tired of waiting around the cornor, I've been in a continual upgrade mode for the last two years. I'm done waiting for the latest and greatest new CPU/GPU/RAM that's coming out. It gets very tiring, specially if you're a student still and you end up blowing most of your spending cash on your rig :D

Choice is 2xGTs or 1xGTX, no G71's no 2xGTXs.

in that case, 2 7800GTs

Great thanks, for those that know of my spending habits know how bad I am with hardware and how fast I upgrade...it's insane! I mean in the past 2 months I've gone through 4 different CPU's and 3 video cards...Lol I just need it all to end! So putting together a config that I'll be satisfied with.

Well 2 Gt's would be around $600 wouldn't it? If you sold the GTX wouldn't the $400 and you put in another $90 then you would be able to get a X1900xt right?

I'd be trading my GTX for a GT + $150-$200 then pick up another GT from the boards, people are selling them for $275 so that would be $75-$125 out of my pocket.

I dont get the point here... suppose you trade for Gt + 175$... then trade the gt for 275$ = 175 + 275 = 450 then throw another 50 out of your pocket and get x1900xt - faster, more feature rich, more future proof

What monitor do you use? What games (or type of games) do you like to play? And what settings do you prefer to play at? What is your budget for a new card (be sure to include what you'd be willing to let your current card go for)? Does price/performance matter most to you, or do you prefer to stick with a particular brand?

I can understand the desire to not want to upgrade for a year, but, it's close to impossible to want to be able to play the latest games right now at the highest settings, and then still be able to play next year's games at the same level with the same card(s).

2 7800GTs are faster.

Of course like has been mentioned you can simply sell 7800GTX for $320 add $180 and get X1900XT that might be faster in future shader intensive games than 2x7800GTs.

Nope. The only thing you can do is compare benchmarks that were done at different times with different configs. Xbit often shows minimum frames in their benchmarks, but, again, you'll have to compare a review from November to a January review.... not a good comparison. I'd like to see more games offer a benchmark utility like FEAR.

Either way, many posters are throwing out cards left and right without knowing his monitor, preferred games, preferred settings, and budget. If the OP doesn't provide this info, asking "which card is better for me" is the equivalent of walking into a car dealership and asking "what car is good?".
