i would have to sell my current gtx and pay the difference for the 512. the way i see it...

SLI 256
faster than single 512 card

1 512:
still very fast
dont need to upgrade PSU
less heat/noise
cheaper than other option
I GET THE 512 MB BUFFER!!! (main selling point for future games)

so im kinda stuck. i can afford each, but obviously cheaper is better. Obviously i dont want any game restrictions, so will the 512 mb card give me what i want in future games with like "ultra high" texture mode, or is it just a gimmick? what would you guys do?

If money isn't an issue than buy another 7800GTX. If you want to save some $$, sell the GTx and buy a pair of GTs. It will probably only cost you an extra $100 and you will have 90-95% of the perfromance of SLI'd GTXs. That's what I decided to do and I think it's the best high-end bang for the buck.

The 7800GTX SLI 256 will obviously be a faster graphics set up, and will cost more as well.

Yah its really hard recommending the 512mb to anybody right now especially at its current $700+ price tag (unless your rich..and even then). It only shows slight performance increase over a 256mb gtx that is unnoticeable in todays games. And seeing as you have 2, i would definetly not upgrade. Thats sum serious PoWAHHH!!! By the time games actually utilize the full 512mb it boasts nvidias new line of cards will have already come out as well as ATi's. I would wait for those instead, and for 512mb to become somewhat of a standard like 256 is still in the distant future.

I decided to get some 256mb GTX cards from someone who's upgrading and got them for around $700 shipped. So 256 will be fine for me! :D

As more and more games start taking advantage of 512 MB RAM a single 512 GTX may well pull ahead of a dual 256 GTX.
