7800GT will be $499

According to VR Zone:

NVIDIA is preparing their GeForce 7800 GT for launch within this week and similarly retail stores worldwide will carry the stock as soon as it is launched. GeForce 7800 GT possess 24 pipes and 8 vertex shaders just like the 7800GTX except that the core and memory clock speeds are lowered. The reference 7800GT card is supposingly clocked at 335MHz core and has 1.1GHz memory clock using 2.0ns GDDR3 memories. No doubt, some card manufacturers will be fitting 1.6ns memories on this card to make their 7800GT cards more attractive. The best thing is that this card will be priced at US$499 which is $100 lower than the current 7800GTX card.

So you think it will be worth it to pay the extra $100 for the 7800 GTX? Should be interesting to see how the benchmarks play out.

335Mhz? If true, that sucks. 95Mhz lower than the stock GTX core is horrible. Surely some would be overclocked, as the GTX's are though. But I would still pay the extra $100 for the GTX. At least until benches are released.. and perhaps its a closer competitor that it looks on paper.

ZZF had the Asus GTX for $529 last week.. just got to be quick and watch for "sales".

I'll probably be buying this, and I doubt that it's worth the extra 100 for the gtx as I bet these gt's will overclock to the gtx speeds.

An OC of 95 MHz isn't trivial, and I doubt that most cards will do it on stock cooling. How often do you see a 30%?

if it was agp I would buy one.
I can definitely see this angle. Maybe nVidia will too.

You're forgetting the mandatory $100 price increase for each new generation of cards... shame on you for thinking corporations don't want more money.

Ahh, yes. This is the way of it all I suppose.

The MID-range cards transition up to $500. %&$*# Does ANYBODY else think this is just STUPID?!!

I mean COME ON!! $500 for mid-level hardware!! I am shocked. Where is the outrage in this thread? NO WAY I'm spending that much green to get mid-level hardware.

We have no clue as to the OC ability of the 7800GT, but lets say it did OC to GTX speeds. The 7800GT can OC to GTX speeds, the GTX OC to unmatched speeds.
So you see, OCing works both ways.

we'll see if there is even much of a difference between the two cards, who knows, maybe a bios update will bring it to a gtx.

You never bought a 9800 non-pro card I take? 325MHz -> 430~450MHz

Agreed. I spent $350 on my 6800GT, and I felt like that was rediculous. I swore off ATI after driver problems w/ my 9600, but if NVIDIA feels that this is the appropriate pricepoint, and ATI doesn't follow, I may jump ship again.

If both ATI and NVIDIA price this way, I'll make do with my 6800GT until they get their wits back.

Since when is a 7800GT a "mid" ranged card? The 6800 GT wasnt a "mid" ranged card.

Both of those cards are 2nd tier highend cards and thus will carry a premium over the true "mid" ranged cards like the 6600GT and I would imagine the 7600GT.

Dont like the price? Dont buy one, if enough people dont like the price the price will be lowered.

Apparently they are finding many people willing to shell out the 500+ bucks for the cards. If they can move their inventory at that price point then more power to them. The consumers are willing to pay it then the manufacturers will price it.

IMO if it is clocked at 335Mhz it doesnt sound like a real worthy card at that price point. I am guessing the 6800Ultra with its high clocks will probably be close on pixel performance and probably faster on fillrate.

If this is same as in 6600GT underclocked severely to 6600 speeds, then I am not complaining. However, 335x24 = 8040 fill-rate lower than x850xt pe from previous generation is very weak. I understand some games are shader limited. But fill-rate is still important for high-rez texture games.

BTW a friend of a friend works at ATI and he just confirmed that new R520 is 32 pipes 🙂 (not that anyone didnt know that).
