so basically, im selling this rig, to my brother.

now because he's my bro, hes probably gonna get a special "family price" and also it means the computer stays in this house. (ie i still get to use it :p)

now i cant envisage him doing much upgrading so along with replacing the A64 3200 (venice) with a suitable A64 X2, i was thinking of future proofing the graphics a little further by basically swapping the 2 XFX 7800GT Extreme editions for a single X1900XTX

will it be worth my while? or a pointless exercise?

should i sell as seperate items? or as a single item (ie SLI setup)

What a great brother! :)

If you can do it and you want to do it for him, then I would do it.

Kudos to you man. :)

It will be worth your while. The X1900XTX is about on par with 2 7800GTs in SLI, so it's worth it.

I made that switch and it was definitely worth it to me, but it really depends on which games you play. Some games are slower and others are faster.

Same experience here. I went from two 7800GTs@550/1300 to my current card and I'm very happy about the switch.

1900XT/XTX should kick the ass of a 7800GT SLi

a 7900GT Sli in most sli supported games may be faster.
But ATi may have better IQ.
For Oblivion 1900XTX will probably be overall better.

What you are doing is actually not a worth while upgrade.
Wait for Geforce 8 or go crossfire 1900XT.

Go dual core or get conroe
or overclock the cpu or wait

Exactly. So while there may be slight performance differences on both the plus and minus sides, I was looking at it from the point of view that a single-card solution is always better. I do believe the XTX would fare significantly better with games coming out in the next year though.

Plus, and it's just my opinion from having used both NVidia and ATI, I think the image quality on the XTX would be superior.

well he likes the RPG type games, so wow, guild wars etc. plays BF2, CS:S and who knows what else is coming out.

i think ill do it then. the sale of these two should pretty much cover the purchase

well im really not looking into actually spending a substantial amount, im jus looking at a straight swap, and a small investment on the CPU.

ive got plenty of time to do this swap, he wont have the money for a month or so. but i was thinkin of doing it now so that i can try out the acclaimed ATI IQ :D

theres really no point in waiting for the next thing to come out, even if it means reduced prices on older hardware. if your gonna buy, theres no time like now

Depends how much time you have to sell.

If you need cash now, sell them as an SLI-ready pair of cards that you can demonstrate to the buyer.

If cash isn't an issue, sell them separately as single cards and wait. You'd maybe get a bit more.

When buying 2 of the same thing, people are used to shops giving them 2 products for a cheaper bundle price than they'd pay were they to purchase them separately.

Can't help thinking that even potential buyers of 2 second-hand video cards would be thinking along the same lines, i.e. "make it worth my while."

It's definitely faster than that. Check ATs 7950gtx review for instance, add about 5-10% for a slightly overclocked XTX (they didnt include it, only XT) and you've got the XTX beating sli 7900gts in a majority of cases at 1600x1200

well may plug for a XT then, its really not gonna make a whole world of difference at 1280x1024 is it.

nah... The XTX's get higher overclocks. The boost is minimal. There are a few XT's with 1.2n memory but almost every XT is 1.1 Actually I've yet to see an XT with 1.2. Maybe at the beginning?
