I never considered the X1800 a valid competitor, I thought ATI killed it. It's hot, loud and 2 slots, why would you choose it over a 7900GT?

If A = B and B > C then A > C
So if 7900gt(voltmodded) = 7900gtx and 7900gtx MUCH> x1800xt then it necessarily follows that 7900gt MUCH > x1800xt

There we go, fairly simple and straightforward, see me after class about any questions, the exam will be next wednesday ;)

I like your equation, but you're missing a few things here. First, the % of people who buy dual video card goodness is rather small (like very small) so the efficiency of the two solutions is a non-issue (SLI is more efficient though so people with the means should keep that in mind).

Second, a 7900GT can be voltmodded fairly easily if you know how to work with your hands but than again it's even easier to raise voltages on the X1800XT. So when you say that a voltmodded 7900GT is better than a stock X1800XT you're neglecting the fact that it can be overclocked too, and quite successfully. If the 256MB versions are anything like their 512MB brothers, than they have some serious potential. I see a lot of guys hitting 725+ on the core and 800+ on the mem. That would give an oced 7900GT a run for it's money.

Third, while you are correct about the 7900GT using less watts it really doesn't come into play unless you are using a super-duper generic 400W PSU or you want to save that extra $1.50 a month in extra energy costs. Seriously, if you have a dumpy PSU than no matter what card you get you should buy a decent PSU. If someone is really worried about saving $1.50 a month than they probably shouldn't be buying a nice video card for their system.

Lastly, the 7900GT does dissipate less heat. This isn't a big issue unless you have no airflow in your case or you live in the Amazon. The noise issue is also not a big deal as the stock fan only ramps up if you tell it too or, again, if you have really poor airflow through your case. Heat and noise are valid points, but not really important IMO.

So what I'm tryinmg to say, with all that blather above, is that the X1800XT is still a very good card and given current pricing I'd have to say it's the better card. You can get the 512MB version for the same price or less than the 7900GT, last I checked, which makes the competition even worse for the Nvidia card.

It's pretty clear that the 7900GT owns the mid level and the X1900XT the high end. Anything higher end is a waste of money IMO. I don't chose cards based on brand anymore, both have good drivers, it's all about bang for buck and it seems both companies compete at different levels.

Uh a 7900gt doesnt own a x1900xt sorry. if you mean sli it better own it for 150-200$ more.

uhh you didn't really read that did you? He said 7900GT owns the middle, while the X1900XT owns the high end. Not really sure where what you said came from...

Now your just changing what he said. He said "It's pretty clear that the 7900GT owns the mid level and the X1900XT the high end"

He just need to change it cus it sounds like hes saying it owns both.

 oh okay he needs a comma then...

No I don't, I used an "and". People need reading comprehension around here.
Right LOL

I used 3DMark just to test the hardware and o/c. You click and go away for some minutes. That's pratical.

As I stated, I didn't mean one card is better than the other. These are just scores, people can see o/c results and high resolution with AF AA. Most websites didn't benchmark with o/c.

There you go. If you want to stress your system and get everything toasty to test that overclock, there are few better (single program) ways to test. Normally I do an overnight with 3DMark05 on 1280x960 with 6xAA and 8xAF. I'll run Prime 95, ATI Tool fuzzy cube thing, a virus scanner, and Folding@Home all day prior to running the 3DMark05. If it passes that 24hour torture test, then it is stable in my book.

I meant overclock of the graphics card, not CPU

My 7900 GTs in sli overclock nicely at 725 core and 816 mem (coolbits will not go higher on mem) My system is seriously bottle necked with my 754 socket cpu...ugh. It is still playing call of duty 2 quite well though:) If anybody knows how to hack coolbits to get more mem freqs...it would be much appreciated.

You have an opteron 170 and you only got 5200 in 3dmark06 with the x1900xt? My xt with a 2.4ghz opty 165 gets ~5900, but I dont think the cpu made that much difference.

Because there is an X1800XT 512mb version available.
