7800GT SLI OR single 7800GTX?

I'm building a gaming PC for a younger relative. I am not a big gamer so I am unsure which would offer the best performance - anyone have some advice?

Thanks in advance...

sli 7800gt will outperform a single gtx..especially if you get the overclocked editions, but perhaps not in low resolutions (if you have 7800gt's in sli why the **** would u play in low res anyway? lol) wait for the 7900gt's which will be released in 30 seconds..err a few days.

If you go over to Newegg, and do a search instead of using the drop menus, you will find out that the 7900GTX's are in stock 🙂

If you're not running at higher than 1280x1024, anything more than a single 7800GT is overkill. Hell, I run games at 1920x1200 and get very respectable framerates with just a single 7800GT.

🙂

yeah, 2 7800GT's would outperform 1 GTX, but imo SLI is overkill
Edit: That 7900GTX looks really nice btw, if your relative is really into gaming I suggest you get one.

Exactly.. For a one card solution, the 7900GTX will be the perfect thing

The only times I recommend SLI is when getting two 6800GS's or if you have a ton of money to waste and want the absolute best. I would just suggest getting a single 7900GT or something.

Just put in a single 7800GT and save the cash for something else.
Agreed. I just built a system around a single EVGA 7800GT and an Athlon 64 3200+ and can play F.E.A.R. very respectably at 1280x1024 with everything maxed out.

If you really want to save some $$$, get the EVGA combo deal (free mobo) - that's what I got and I love it.

Plus, there's a whole community of folks that have gotten in on the deal sharing overclocking tips, etc....

oh man, that makes me feel so horrible, I got my 7800GT for $370 back when it was fairly young, this is depressing to G70 owners.

The X1900XTX is still king of performance though.

This is highly debatable. It's very very close at the moment, both in price and performance

Well, in terms of raw single card performance, the 7900GTX still trailed behind the X1900XTX a bit in Anandtech's newest review. However, SLI was more effective than Crossfire. The 7900GTX is at about the same price as the X1900XTX, and the X1900XT is even cheaper, which can easily obtain X1900XTX performance. The 7900GT seems to be the best choice for the OP though, seeing how he's not a hardcore gamer.
