My games of battlefield 2 and quake 4 are runied by my 7800gt which seems to freeze the game without fail usually not more than 20-30 minutes into every frag session. Using the temp monitor in display properties, i see that the car idles at 55c and usually freezes in game after 79c or so. The card also feels damn scorching hot on its poor ass heatsink/fan after the crash. I'm damn sure its the vid card because the screen even corrupts shortly after the freeze most of the time. Should I ebay this card and grab a 7900gt or stick a new cooler on the card in hope of a better future? It's a 3d Fuzion brand vid card, btw, a subsidiary of bfg. I'm thinking ebay, people are selling them for 250-300.

You might try an Arctic Cooling NV Silencer 5 R3 which, in my opinion, is a fabulous cooler. Utterly Silent and very effective, exhausting the hot air out the back of the case. http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga1.php
It does a far better job than my stock cooler did.
I would also make sure I had good airflow through the case: in from the front and out the back. Many cases have very poor airflow, especially in the front where the air comes in. Often a creative session with a dremel and drill will open things up a bit without having to ruin the cases "good looks".
I have an XFX 7800GT which idles at 35C and maxes out at 58C under full stress-test kind of load. In games like DoD source it runs about 49C.
Thats while running with clocks of 473MHz/1.24GHz core/mem.
I use the AC NV Silencer 5 R3 mentioned above and have a case which provides EXCELENT airflow,
(and good looks
) the Antec TX640B.

And one more thing, if you are overclocking your card, back it down a few MHz to see if that clears up your problem. Always increase one thing at a time when you are going up, then when you get corruption, you know which it is, either gpu or mem. lol selling faulty items is a big no no, unless u say that there is a problem, in which case u wont get quite as much money for it
That card is sure running hot. I run my core at 490 and mem at 1200 and even under a stressful load of Oblivion I bump up to 72 or 73 once in a while.. with a Zalman cooler.

Well, when you really look at it, ebay is really just like an online garage sale. I don't expect any used peice of hardware to be still in spec with the original performance levels. Back in high school I was always using used hardware and never went without problems. Personally, I never shop through ebay--its too popualr for me with too much wrong that could happen. I like buying from companies since a person can hide easier than a company could if things went sour.
Still, selling an almost useless peice of hardware is worse than selling a plain used one. You really shouldn't throw crap on other people and expect to get money for it.
Try the aftermarket coolers and see if that helps. If that doesn't work, play around with drivers and maybe tune your case up for some better overall airflow. If all of that is done, and the problem still persists, then think about rightly selling the card and/or getting a newer one. This is all, of course, only something you should do if your warranty is void for some reason. If its still good, give the RMA a try.

My 7800GT idles at 35C and loads up around 55 with just the stock cooler and fans adjusted to be 75% on full 3D load. Idle fan at 38%.
I have good airflow and keep the computer in a cool, open area. Try refiting the HSF and apply AS5. have you dusted your case out? Where is the computer at?

back off you crazy nerds. the card works just fine and I'm sure with an aftermarket cooler it will run everything great. Games like CS: Source and Need for Speed Most Wanted will play all day long. I got lucky and actually just finished playing bf2 for about an hour right before I wrote this post. And I AM about to order that NV Silencer r3 anyway, so settle down.
edit: My Silverstone case does have decent airflow too, here it is. and yes my wires are routed nicely
edit2: I found the nvsilencer here in houston for $25 at axion tech, here it is. might qualify for a hot deal, everywhere else it was priced around $33+shipping. Tomorrow I will buy and install it.

I've also got that case. Love it. Good airflow and I'm actually going to be water cooling it soon.
Even though you've bought the Silencer doesn't mean that the card you were thinking about selling wasn't faulty. We'll settle down as long as people like you don't sell utter **** on ebay for the same price as perfectly working components.

Ok, the Nvsilencer R3 has been installed and now my temps are around 45c idle and stay around 65 or so when under full load. I know they could be even better if I applied the cooler with arctic silver, but I used the included TIM because I was lazy. I am very satisfied, I've been playing BF2 for the last couple of hours, something I haven't been able to do since I put together this box back in November.

Great price $$ on that NVSilencer! I was going to suggest svc.com in my post but forgot.
Those temps are much improved, I'd open the front door on that swanky case to let unrestricted airflow through and see if the temps come down any further. Just out of curiousity to see if that screen is letting enough air through.
