Hi,

I bought this card new, and it wont run 3D games, at all. System hangs immediately. And often in 2D xp desktop too, unless i run in vga low res.

Things I've tried:

Tried the driver on the included CD,
and the latest nvidia driver (91.47).

Disabled USB so it doesn't share irq16.

500w psu,
even ran the hdd's off a 2nd 375w psu temporarily.

Reinstalled dx9.

Changed agp apeture size from 256 to 128, and back.

Card runs cool enough.

Mobo is asus p4c-800 deluxe, has run perfectly with 5950ultra card for many months prior to this.

I am out of ideas to try next. please help !

What is the PSU exactly? Wattage alone doesn't mean squat.

7800GS is no slouch. It is the fastest AGP card out there, and it does suck some juice. Much more than a 5950.

PSU = SAF/Sapphire520. I also disconnected some optional devices from the PSU, and ran 1 of the 2 HDD's and the 4 fans, off a seperate 375W PSU, temporarily, to reduce the load on the 500W PSU. Made no difference, same problem, hence I don't _think_ it's PSU related.

It "should" be sufficient. Do you have another power supply of high caliber you could test it with?

Sort of. I have an Enermax EG365AX-VE(G) (26A on the +12 rail) in another computer. I disconnected most of its connections, and connected this to the 2 molex connectors of the 7800GS in my main comp. So my usual Globalwin was powering the PC, except for the Enermax supplying the 7800 via the 2 molex connectors. Still had the same lock up problems.
I can use Windows in a fairly low resolution, to some degree, but with frequent crashes, and if I do Start -> All Programs, that window opens up blank, and the system locks, nearly every time at that exact same point. Kind of leads me to think it's probably not PSU related ?
I've put my old 5950Ultra card back in and all is working fine with that card.
Most puzzling, and driving me crazy that I've bought this thing and it won't work.

Any other ideas much appreciated !

Have you tried the card in another pc to rule out incompatiblilty on your mobo?

No unfortunately I don't have access to another I can try it in just yet. However, when searching with Google for P4C800-E Deluxe and 7800GS, I see quite a few forum signatures listing these 2 parts together in peoples systems, so it looks like some others are using this combination succesfully.

Did you use driver cleaner utility first?
Try this...
Clean any drivers you have with driver cleaner.
Then reboot your system and when windows finds new hardware and it asks to install drivers don't install them.
Now put your driver cd in and install the drivers
Then reboot your pc.
I had a similar problem with my 7800gs. It was months ago so I really don't remember exactly what I did but I think I'm right.
My computer would not boot to windows at all and I had to use safe mode to boot.

Edit:Update your bios and chipset drivers? I did that too

I picked up a BFG 7800GS first day available at BB so I have had time to fool around with it a lot. I am using an old beaten severely upon Enlight 400 watt ps in my rig. Your ps should be ok unless it has issues.

The best drivers are still the 84.21's (for me)......all the newer ones had some issue or another. The 84.21's are what I am using now. I would suggest you give those a shot. Smooth like butter gaming. I love this card.

After messing about trying to run the system with 2 PSU's to disprove an inadequate PSU, I properly took out the 520W one and replaced it with the 365W one. It works. Time to wave goodbye to the 28A@+12v 520W one which mysteriously doesn't cut it, and go buy another uber PSU tomorrow. Oh well ! And it only took 13 hours to figure this out >.<
