7800gs CO SuperClock AGP card

I just got this card , and I've not had a chance to pop it in yet. I'm going to do it tonight so I can get on some Oblivion with the goodies turned up.....Anyone have any experience with this bad boy? And the only cooler that I've found for it on Newegg is for a watercooling setup...any options out there?

Good question about aftermarket cooling. I know the Zalman solutions aren't compatible with the 7800GS AGP, that usually means the AC ones won't be either. I'll get back to you.

i bet they would work with modification, but arent officially supported like the 6600GT AGP isnt for zalmann but people get it wokring

Well, here's the problem. As far as I can tell, nobody makes an aftermarket air-cooled solution for this card. Since I don't own one, I can't take off the existing heatsink to take a look at why this is. I'm going to assume it has something to do with the placement of the HSI bridge, the same issue as the 6600GT AGP.

Someone should take theirs apart, take some pictures and dimensions, then post them so we can try and figure out how to mod something on there.

the die spot and mounting holes should be the same though, doesnt the HSI bridge already have a heatsink ? like my 6600GT if so then leave it on.. thats how it works with mounting the VF700 on agp, but it also sticks out abit over the side of teh card, so i guess in very limited cases it wont fit in their case hahaha bad choice of words eh

Right, but it's the location of the HSI that I think is the problem...with the 6600GT, it was conveniently off to the side with it's own separate heatsink. I don't see one of those on the 7800GS, so it's probably using the fan housing/heatsink to cool the HSI. That's why I'd like to see some pics of it with the stock heatsink removed, the pictures I've seen in reviews really haven't helped.

Like I said, I don't own one, so I'm just guessing.

If this 7800GS has a silencer on it, maybe someone can track down more info about it and quite possibly get a shot of opposite side of the card and we can work from there.

It's silencer, but I'm pretty sure there is way to mod the NV5 or Ati silencer 5 onto it. We need more info. 🙂

LOL...nice job with the thermal paste...

That's the kind of picture I'm looking for. Thoughts...

1. I don't see any mounting holes for HSI heatsink. Maybe you could use a sandwich type heatsink mod.

2. If you could mount one, you'd have to cut off part of the vf700's fins for clearance. There's no way to mod the vf900 because of the heatpipes (unless you bent them, but that seems pretty sketchy)

3. It looks like there's an extra copper extension on the top of that Silencer to reach the RAM. Seems like it would be a pretty serious mod, basically you'd have to replace the base of the cooler with one you fabricated yourself. Maybe Gainward sells them seperately?

(edit) 4. It's a 7800GT chip. Is that standard for the GS, or do they usually have their own chip?

Acutally, it's Thermal "GooP". So, it's non-conductive and when applied to a heatspreader type of contact(heatsink), the spreader will expand the paste upon thermal inclines. Which would explain why it's messy in the picture, but completely normal sight.

I don't think that is an extension. It's more of a seperate copper plated heatspreader that are made of some form of .5mm copper sheeting. They used to use them on the GF4 Ti series memory chips.

The heatspreader is mounted to the holes seen on each end of the 4 BGA chips.

One other way of modding a higher quality heatsink would be to use an Alpha UBC60 and drill tap the right mounting holes to the PCB of the GS. The heatsink has a copper heatspreader design on the bottom.

You can probably mount the plastic exhausting system cover over the HS and have a complete design.

Ah...ah...finally. XFX without the heatsink:

Looks like you could use a vf700 on there, probably even a vf900 without the ramsinks. Even looks like there are mounting holes for a HSI heatsink. I don't think you'd want to do this with an eVGA card though, they don't have the metal bracket across the top, and the weight of the heatsink at the end could cause some warping.

So, in general, I'd say yes, you can probably fit a vf700 or vf900 on the XFX. Someone's going to have to try it. Make sure you get a separate HSI heatsink. No way you're going to be able to use a Silencer though.
