I'm with you on that guess, but of course there might be a bit more OC headroom (warranty issue) and it should definitely do better in certain games (Tesselation, ROP improvements etc) than the 6900 series. Will definitely be a sad consumer if they aren't closer to 6870 and 6850 MSRP than 6900 MSRP.

those prices are insane if true. the 6950 and 6970 cards have nearly disappeared though so I guess that was the plan.

The prices on 7870 should be considerably lower.
7950 with 1.5gb vram has msrp around 419$ or even less. And there are also rumors about 7890.

There is no room for a 7890. Where would that go in respect to performance?

The 7950 is a good 50% faster than the 6870:

The 7870 HAS to be faster than the 6870 by at least 25%, otherwise it's a joke. That leaves barely 30% until the next part. And to be honest: 25% IS a joke, so I would rather estimate 30-40% increase with the 7800 series. Then there is no space left.

LoL. So either the 7870 is really close to a 7950 (and the price makes sense, Kind of) and there is as a massive gap between the 7770 and the 7850. Essentially AMD won't have a card bellow $300 cause those 7850s are not going to sell at MSRP for a while.

I think this is ridiculous. Ignoring the prices, The 7870 has a full 32ROPS and twice the shaders as a 7770 and pretty high clock speeds. I'm going to say it will handily beat a 6970. I say a tad slower than a 580. $300 for these cards would have been so awesome.

I say $300+ for the 7870 and $230 for the 7850, as it looks to be about 20~25% slower.

Just saying I rather expect it closer to the 6970 according to these specs. 10-15% is nothing I would call comfortable by the way. Look at high res and SSAA and this lead melts down to almost nothing and you have the 6970 beating the 580 on occasion. 20+ I would call comfortable.

The specs are a little lower than expected. But I bet the price will be closer to $250 and $299 upon release. AMD won't be that stupid to price themselves out of the market.

15-16 months later and we're getting the same price/performance ratio or worse than AMD's previous 6xxx series. Am I the only one seeing the suck in this?

Really shows the bias people have towards certain brands.

I see the suck, I don't like it. But it is what it is, competition isn't fierce at the moment.

This makes no sense. If the 7870 handily beats a 6970 it's at 7950 levels. It will need to be at 6970 level performance. If they offer 580 performance it's too close to 7950 levels.
Unfortunately AMD made their bed when they priced the 7970 so high. They can't offer you any more price/performance than 6950/6970 otherwise that would kill 7970/7950 sales. Already the 69XX series makes the 79XX series look silly as far as price/performance goes. If they were to offer even more bang for the buck with 78xx series sales for the 79xx would plummet.
My guess is 6970 performance +- 5% at ~$400 for 7870
And 6950 performance +- 5% at ~$350 for 7850.

There's no competition in the oil market. Would it be okay if they price gouged and you paid $20 for a gallon of gas? I mean the competition isn't fierce.

We'll have to wait and see if these prices are true. I completely understand the price of the 7950 as it is about equal to the GTX580 to slightly faster. The 7970 makes sense since no other single GPU can touch it. But the performance and midrange section are more about bang for the buck. 6970 performance for $400 is hardly exciting.

These price guesstimates make no sense. Is this going to be another 5K series where there is basically a giant hole from x7xx to x8xx?

Judging from the trends set, if these cards are equall to HD 6950/6970, they'll most likely be introduced around their price points.

So if I had to guess:
HD 7850 - $250 to 280
HD 7870 - $350 to 380

Woof. I can't wait to see what nVidia does. It seems at least on the AMD front - they're following suit with the rest of the world.

No way the hd7870 is going to be $400. Common sense people. The hd7950 1 gig is going to be $399, the hd7890 (still based on tahiti, albeit more cut down the hd7950) is going to be $349. The hd7870 is going to be $299.... at least until GK104 forces AMD to do some price readjustments.

Probably the worst analogy I have ever seen. People get absolutely raped on the price of gas, some countries much worse than others, usually the ones that have none of their own...
