I got a 7800GT over 5 months ago, so I'm perfectly happy with the fact that I've had decent performance for the last 5 months I wouldn't have been able to get any other way.
The 7900GT is exactly the same price, but, well, 5 and a half months later, so I don't have a care about it at all.

If you saw the benchmarks for the new 7900GT then you shouldn't feel too bad. No reason to upgrade unless you can easily exchange it somehow. I am personally waiting for something better to come a long before I use my step up. That way, I get more than 3-5 FPS increase and a dinky heatsink.

I have a 7800gtx that I've had for a while now and to be perfectly honest I don't really care.

I always knew that something faster would come along and this didn't change my purchasing decision one bit.

As the Godfather of Soul- Mr James Brown- says "I feel good". Cause "Papa's got a brand new bag". Bought the 7800GT CO 3 weeks ago for $295, getting the step up for $319 for a 7900 GT CO - which is approx $40 for more pipes and faster cllock, so " Hit me mama, and do it again". Oh, did I mention I am #2 in the que? "OWWW! I feel good!".

You're missing something here Lonyo. The 7900GT is the same price as the 7800GT but with the performance of the 7800GTX. To those denegrating the significance of the 7900GT, do whatever it takes to help you justify your purchase price of whichever card you bought.

I for one am ecstatic that I waited even though there were many who railed against those of us who were waiting. :)

I just gt my 7800gt co se for $239 after rebate. I would rather have the 7900gt, but at the price I got my 7800 for, I am not sad. Plus it overclocks really well. I am hoping that the 7800 prices drop down some so I can get a 2nd card for sli later on.

i am really happy because i can sent eVGA my 7800GT CO SE which i bouth for 295 along with a single $5 bill and i get a 7900GT. note, the 7900GT is slightly better than the 7800GTX at stock, but it can easily be OCed to 7800GTX 512 levels, even retailers sell them at those speeds. with a good cooler like the silencer which i am adding to my card, it should get to 7900GTX speeds since they are the same core.

I bought the 78oogtx and it makes me sick that the new ones are announced about two weeks after i bought the 7800

I thought it was known that 7900 series were coming out on March 9th all the way in January. Xbitlabs certainly reported it.

There were certainly rumors that they would be released at CeBit, but some sources were saying later in March. Until just a few weeks ago, I would not have recommended waiting unless you were looking to spend $400+ on a card or cards.

In any case, specs and pricing for the cards were all over the place; for a while, a bunch of people were convinced the high end would be a 32-pipe 750+Mhz core for $700+. Given the "accuracy" of such speculation in earlier launches, some skepticism here was certainly justified. :p

But for everyone who is upset:

1) G80 and R600 are going to be out in 6 months

Speculation. DX10 isn't even completely finalized, so this seems like a VERY optimistic schedule.

and be 2x faster than 7900GTX

DEFINITELY speculation. The latest rumors I've heard about R600, at least, say that it's probably more like a die-shrunk and OCed X1900XTX rather than a full unified architecture, but it's WAY too early to tell about either one.

- the cycle never ends, something faster is always around the corner.

Very true.

2) Besides 550/1600+ overclocked 7900GTs, there isn't that much difference and it certainly doesnt make 7800GT for $260 a bad buy 2 weeks ago. Same generation of graphics cards will generally perform similar in games. Save your $ for next generation.

Right; basically, the stock 7900GT matches the old 7800GTX, but at the old price of the 7800GT. This is a nice improvement, but unless most of the cards turn out to be monster overclockers and prices keep dropping, it's not "OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE NVIDIA DID THIS TO US" worthy.

I would not be real happy if I had bought a 7800GTX "Ultra" 512MB recently, though. :p

I'm so glad I'm still within the return period of my 7800gt co which I bought for $360 CAD. I'm returning it tomorrow and buying a 7900gt co superclock at NCIX for $419 CAD. I think it's worth the extra $70 since the performance of a stock 7900gt is better than a 7800gtx 256mb, so this superclock will really kick donkey balls.

7800GT is overkill for some enthusiasts, quit being a brat and take what you got.

Got my XFX 7800GT in Dec for $280 after MIR including a free copy of COD2 & Far Cry. Sold it 3 weeks ago for $260.

Purchased the X1900XTX for retail $680 (including tax) - $50 MIR. CompUSA has them for $100 off so I'm going to get pricematched this weekend.

To answer the question... No, I'm not unhappy. I got my 7800GT for a good price and unloaded it at the perfect time. :)

To those who have 7800GT's & 7800GTX's and say they aren't bothered by the 7900's, stop lying. :p I'll admit I wish I had waited on the 7900's before purchasing my X1900XTX and it's not that the X1900XTX isn't a great card. It's just $150 more than the 7900GTX. Oh well, after pricematch and rebate mine should be around $530. Not all that bad I guess.

Thanks. Any idea how much extra I would have to pay to upgrade to a 7900?

Think I got mine for 160'ish eVGA Geforce 6600GT 128-P2-N368-TX Video Card - Retail

You are looking at at least $140 extra for an upgrade. I beleive the retail prices are goign to be around $300. Without the box, you're going to be paying nearly $200 bucks to upgrade.

Use this to figure out how much you gotta pay. It says it's confirmed by eVGA.

you dont have the top of the line card anymore.... big deal technology is so fast you basically can never have the best unless your countinously buying stuff. as long as your graphic card plays all the latest games at the settings you want than who cares?

edit: I never spend more than 350 basically on a video card it's not worth it you end up regreting spending tons of money for barely any performance. price for performance rember that instead of getting a 7800GTX you got a 7800GT because it was good enough correct?

I feel fine. You did know that technology would march on, didn't you? ;)

I knew technology would march on, but the people who just got their 7800's can step up for like $30, how will eVGA afford this?

I've had my video card for 5 months and it's been really good, so I really don't feel bad, technology does get outdated and my 7800GT was near top of the line for a while, 2nd best at the time, so I'm ok with the new 7900's. The 7800's still get the job done and then some.

i am very happy with my 7800GTX TOPeven more so since I found out that the HDTV out is HDCP enabled.....

LOL
Keep your 7900's.

My GPU is running 100% stable at 140/505 which is more than sufficient for my meeds.

I would assume they'd take the 'loss' on the old cards as a tax writeoff and/or use them as replacements for cards that get RMAed.

They could also sell them as refurbs, recouping some of the loss (and then write off the rest).

Still, I must agree, it seems like they will lose a bundle on people going 7800GT->7900GT for next to nothing. If they can get a big enough tax break, maybe it doesn't really hurt them.

I think the difference here is for a little bit of FPS only. But the difference is not big enough to really effect the playability.

7800gt can play games that the 7900gt can. And when new games come out that the 7800gt cant handle, the 7900gt probably wont be able to handle the either.

these half generation cards are all about the e-penis

Thats the biggest load of crap I've read in a while.
Sound like your just bitter you either dont have a new card or cant afford one.

When a new GPU makes my games run faster and smoother and costs less, why the hell wouldnt I want to get one? It's nothing to do e-penis crap, its about getting the best for your games and for your money.

Plus, you do realise between now and the next range of GPUs you will have many games you may want to play? Such as Quake Wars, Prey, Oblivian, Spore, Medieval Wars, Battle for Middle Earth, HL2 Aftermath, Godfather, Ghost Recon, Barbarian Wars, and so on and so on.

I have a 7800gt and I can afford a new if I wanted to. heck, I have 45 days left in my step-up so I could get a 7900gt very easily.

Instead of worrying about buying a new video card, how about going out, having some fun? There are bigger things in life.

Are you gonna go up to a girl and be like "Hey! I get 90 FPS in in Ghost Recon!"
